Taxes have a terrible rap. Always have. People never think of all the good things taxes have done upon hearing the word (roads, libraries, general goodness). Instead, most go to some Medieval image of a king plundering his own people to fill his coffers just enough to afford that golden ass scrubber he’s always wanted. “If you’re going to scrub your ass in these Medieval times, you might as well do it right!” he’d always argue. But that’s besides the point. The point is, taxes should have done something to bolster its image early on. If Newt Gingrich can do it, why not taxes? Perhaps we wouldn’t be in this mess of semantics over “big government tax increases” versus “increased revenues” as the U.S. comes ever-so-close to defaulting on its debts if taxes had made it known they were there for us growing up.
