No farce is complete without a cream pie
What if you held a parliamentary committee hearing in London and a full-blown farce broke out?

Of course, it even featured a pie-throwing incident, or a "shaving foam" incident as the Brits, with their national gift for imbuing gravitas upon the merely ridiculous, called it. Of course, it was Rupert Murdoch's leaping trout of a young wife Wendi (would anyone have bet against her spelling it with an I?) who got to her feet first to rescue the hubby. Of course, afterwards, when Murdoch gamely returned to the table, now in shirt sleeves, he was lavishly praised by Louise Mensch, the woman who had been questioning him when the shaving foam erupted and who commended him for his "immense guts," as if he'd just been through a firefight — or, you know, had his private phone hacked.

If there's an institution in that poor country that isn't broken at the moment, it wasn't apparent when the gang of three — elder and younger Murdochs and Rebekah Brooks, the woman who by reputation was one of their pit bulls until her recent resignation and arrest — appeared Tuesday before British lawmakers.
