Could a GOP president fix the economy?
Could a GOP president fix the economy?

There are at least two things on which the GOP presidential candidates agree: Former President George W. Bush did a bad job as steward of the U.S. economy, and President Barack Obama is doing worse.

Under Bush, taxes were slashed and spending was out of control, causing the national debt to skyrocket, the candidates argue. And Bush’s administration is responsible for the lax regulation that led to the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent recession.

Obama has failed to gain control of the mess, they continue. The unemployment rate is above 9%, consumer and investor confidence is flagging, and disagreement over how to reduce the nation’s deficit has many worried that the United State could default on its debt.

There are plenty of reasons to criticize Obama, and Republican candidates have wasted little time in doing so. But amid the posturing, would the front-runners really bring anything different to the White House? How would they actually make a difference in economic policy and put the nation back on track?

1. A GOP president...
...couldn't fix a ham sandwich.

They will destroy this country, and speed up the Fascist takeover of
our democracy. That's all they know how to do.

14. To answer your question, NO. History has shown that Republican presidents create bad economies.
Start with the Harding-Coolidge-Hoover trio whose laissez-faire economics led to the Great Depression.

We had economic downturns under Eisenhower and Nixon.

Much of today's economic problems can be traced to Reaganomics that were exacerbated by both Bush I and Bush II.

2. Puke. A GOP president would owe all to the Kochs.
Ike and Gerald Ford are a distant memory.

3. Feudalism is an economy
so yes, the GOP, once in charge of the entire government, could indeed create an economy.

My guess is that none of us would enjoy it much.

4. IMO they would make things worse for the avg. American, and better still for the
wealthy. I suspect the stock markt wuld do well, and all the yammering would stop because the Pubs would have their power back, thus the media would stop gripeing as well. I think they would make the current tax cuts permanent, slash entitlements, and eliminate as many social programs as possible. I alsi believe at least one if not two or three RW SCOTUS's would resign to insure a Pub appointment to retain their total control. We would finally become a total corporate controlled country.

Would it be better? I guess it all depends on what class you're in, huh.

8. Yes.
If by "fix" you mean "render permanently inoperable" as in "The president has got the economy in a fix."

That's what I was going to say.

A GOP Caesar would "fix" the economy like my Vet "fixes" a tomcat.
Cut them nuts right off.

12. Well, IMO for most Americans it would spell the end of the US as they ever knew it and
many would become serfs to the system, although, I bet many do not realize the reality of that, as we would morph into a fascist police state. And perhaps even a theocracy.

I do not think of the US as a very stable country. Also, I think there is a very good chance we would see more wars. This country loves war. In short, it would be a miserable place for those not on the take.

I also think we would see cheating and dishonesty soar even more.

13. Yes, without question.
Because then you would have two parties governing instead of just the Dems with a mountain of GOP obstruction as present.

This country will accomplish nothing until the Dems win back the house or the GOP takes the presidency. The sad truth is that we're all hostages until then.

And let me be clear: I do not want a President Romney or Bachmann in any way. Obama 2012 for sure. But this hostage taking will not stop with Obama still in the White House and Boehner holding the speakership.

15. Nice try
The GOP had the presidency and congress and SCOTUS for 6 years, arguably the 6 worst in the nation's history. So "ending the gridlock" is not the right prescription. You should think before you post.

21. Did you even read what I wrote?
The question was phrased as "Could" not "Will". I meant that it would be POSSIBLE, unlike now where every possible good idea is being obstructed. We need to win the house back. Did you not read what I wrote?

16. HELL NO!!!
All the Repubs have to offer is more Reaganomics, they have nothing new to offer. Under 30 years of Reaganomics, the country might be FUBAR at this point. We urgently need a president that will try something new, like give the Congressional Progressive Caucus's economic plan a shot. The Republican and DLC policies have failed miserably.

22. So. Under a Republican president, we entered a recession. Under a Democratic president, we
...left the recession and entered a recovery. Now we have a Republican congress for not even a year, and we have re entered a recession and are in threat of defaulting on our debt. I think it's pretty clear what the story is here...
