But this past week has been particularly damning for George W. Bush. Bipartisan investigations find his Iraq war policy was based on faulty intelligence many insiders have already said was twisted to suit Bush's agenda. With the indictment of major Bush contributor Ken Lay and other Enron-linked figures, new scrutiny is being paid to relationships between top White House figures and unsavory players in the corporate world. And it's revealed that military records that would have answered whether Bush went AWOL during his National Guard service have been "inadvertently" destroyed.

Destroyed records. Indicted donors. Trumped-up intelligence claims. Imagine what a "special prosecutor" could do with that if one were given carte blanche to investigate Bush as Kenneth Starr investigated Bill Clinton. We spent tens of millions and countless hours to turn up nothing more than details of a sexual relationship. That ultimately fruitless expedition is revisited in a new documentary, "The Hunting of the President."

Meanwhile, Bush defenders argue over such critical matters as whether Edwards, 51, is too young or too good-looking to be vice president. Whether Kerry and Edwards are too rich to be legitimate Democrats. Whether their wives dressed appropriately for their first joint appearance.

Nearly four years in office and that's the best they can do?
