I wish they would stop saying we r greatest country in the world !
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 08:43 AM by NikRik
On paper and our words in the bill of rights would certainly make it appear that way . However we r now becoming a two class society the haves and the have nots! I for instance have been out of work since 2009!Have filled out dozens of job applications on computer web sites (no never get to talk to anyone for work) along with thousands /millions of others . We continue to spend all our money on more police fire departments not schools hospitals and help for thos who are ormay soon be homeless. In the town I live in I cannot remember there ever being a fire in the last 15 years I've been a resident yet they have these huge fire houses within walking distance of eachother. You cant leave your house witrhout one of the saturated police presence following you hoping for a excuse to pull you over and harrass you! My grand parents came here from Italy in thev early 20th century and did good at working hard. The new deal by our best President ever President Franklin D Roosevelt gave the poor a working chance.I dont see us coming even close to anything like this happening. The best country in the world?not any more. Just a two party country the rich and the poor.We have so much money allocated for milatary spending that could somehow be used to put us back to work however the politicians with their high incomes are to complacent to give a crap!
I love My Coutry Yet its Leting Me down !

1. Yes.
It seems that the worse it gets, the more they amp up that meme.

I'm sixty one years old and remember when that claim had a lot of merit....It now has a lot less.:eyes:

3. I Wish Michael Moore Would Do A Documentary On How Many Other Countries In The World ........
are far more advanced and growing than us. I've been fortunate to be well traveled. Before I got to travel I believed all the stories about how great we are in comparison to other countries. I've traveled extensively through Europe, Asia and South America and saw firsthand how these countries are in comparison to us. Watch some of the footage of what the MSM is showing us of other parts of the world. They show us the underdeveloped and undeveloped parts of these countries and don't show us the technological, architectural and transportational sides. I suspect that they are doing this on purpose to keep the image that our country is the worlds greatest - but that is fast fading. Our infrastructure is crumbling while in other countries it is flourishing. Why I just heard yesterday that China is in the process of building the worlds largest airport - that would be as big as Bermuda.

Last time I was in China - I was amazed by the amount of building and development that is going on over there. Look at the Mid East. On TV we see images of bombed out sections of Afghanistan and Iraq - yet they don't show us what is going on in Kuwait, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, etc.

I'd move to Europe in an instant just because of their fantastic transportation systems.

Most American's don't get out of this country. They have no concept of what is going on in other parts of the world. Most think that poor children are still starving in Europe. That's unfortunate - because they don't believe that poor children are starving in this country. Look at the numbers that came out earlier this week about poverty in America. It shameful.

2. The more they have to keep saying it, the less it is really true.
Great countries don't need constant re-assurance that they really are great. We used to be a great country, until the "Reagan Revolution(tm)", now we are a broke country.

8. Reagan was probably the worst thing to ever happen to this country ...
except for Jefferson Davis.... maybe.

Raygun is definitely top 2.

The US hasn't been number one at anything except military spending in a LONG time.

5. Some advice
1st - I do agree with you on most of your post.

However, spelling, punctuation and paragraphs make it easier for people to read your thoughts.

Moreover, are you advocating eliminating police and fire departments? That seems short sighted.

6. I clicked your profile and just seeing what town you live in
I can think of two very good reasons for you to have more fire stations than average. Quakes, including the fault named after the town and the Lawrence Livermoore Labs. Add that to the fact that you are part of a huge urban core that shares the quake threat, and the last thing I'd complain about is fire departments. This is one of the most affluent towns of that size in the country.
Oh and just for fun, You Tube of a house fire in your town, last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWvkhBsTk4k.

I agree with some of your points, but I am big into perspective.

9. I am also about perspective.
However I must admit that the cops in the US are not exactly great. They used to be pretty good in most places, until Reagan started to militarize them and now some of them are definitely of the shoot first and ask questions NEVER school of police work.

Firemen tho' Seriously? Who doesn't admire someone who will run into a burning building to save your life?

7. By what measure are we 'the greatest'?
It reminds me of the Nazis. We're great because we say we're great. As if other countries can justify national pride.

13. Ave Imperator, morituri te salutant.
This is what I predict will be on the dollar one day, replacing either "in God we trust", or the quant "e pluribus unum."
