Perry's Fundamentalist Backers 'Rename' D.C., Rip Lady Liberty

John Benefiel, who endorsed Rick Perry's massive prayer meeting known as "The Response," says he has unilaterally renamed the District of Columbia as the "District of Christ" ... because Columbia is a Pagan goddess! When someone sent me this in an e-mail, I thought it had to be a joke. No one could be this stupid. But apparently this guy Benefiel and his cronies are.

He's going around proclaiming a 40-day "prayer war" to reclaim Washington for Jesus. Why? Because he believes it's being held hostage - not by a dysfunctional and gridlocked Congress - but by some goddess named Columbia!

Hey, John, the last I heard, the term Columbia was based on the name Christopher Columbus, who I'm sure would be quite surprised to learn he had been made into a goddess.

If "god" is real and is omnipotent, omnipresent, omnibenevolent and omniscient, then prayer is futile for all is already known and proscribed by 'god' therefore rendering your pathetic entreaties for power and glory meaningless.

If "god" is real, but not omnipotent, omnipresent, omnibenevolent or omniscient, then 'god' fails to have the power necessary to grant your requests anyway and you are wasting your time.

If "god" is not real, then you're wasting your time anyway and might as well pray to Joe Pesci instead! (all credit due to the late, great George Carlin)
