It's come to this: Conservatives have appropriated the terms "patriot" and "family" as their own, they've wrapped themselves in the American flag and challenged anyone to untangle it from their philosophy. The bald eagle? It's theirs, too, a close avian cousin to the hawk that symbolizes military might and - some would say - aggression.
The next thing you know, they'll claim exclusive rights to the word "mom" and won't serve a slice of apple pie to anyone who doesn't have a Bible on the shelf and a copy of On the Origin of Species in his fireplace. And forget attending any baseball game. We wouldn't want to sully the national pastime with our presence now, would we? The ballpark is surely no place for liberals.
As liberals, our open-mindedness is both our greatest strength and our Achilles' heel. You're a lot less likely to pull the wool over our eyes. But then, on the other hand, we lack the solidarity to fight a collective herd of sheep with enough cashmere over their pupils to clothe an entire army. And they'll sweep us right along with them, powerless to fight against the tide of clones and drones and their chaperones. As one of my favorite T-shirts wisely proclaims, "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."
