Poor quality of students entering IITs: N R Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys
3 Oct, 2011, 03.02PM IST, PTI

NEW YORK: Voicing his displeasure over the quality of engineers that pass out of the IITs, Infosys chairman emeritus N R Narayana Murthy has said there is a need to overhaul the selection criteria for students seeking admission to the prestigious technology institutions.

Addressing a gathering of hundreds of former IITians at a 'Pan IIT' summit here, Murthy said the quality of students entering Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has deteriorated over the years due to the coaching classes that prepare engineering aspirants.

He said the majority of the students fare poorly at jobs and global institutions of higher education.

"Thanks to the coaching classes today, the quality of students entering IITs has gone lower and lower," Murthy said, receiving a thundering applause from his audience.

Snip"He said apart from the top 20 per cent of students who crack the tough IIT entrance examination and can "stand among the best anywhere in the world," quality of the remaining 80 per cent of students leave much to be desired."

So much for that "best and brightest BS."

1. This is what happens when students are only taught how to pass tests

2. Murthy has said the same thing before many times.
He's an important man, so it gets reported in the local press, even if it's just his opinion and isn't even news.

3. I heard that China and India are producing hundreds of thousands of engineers...
Engineering requires a lot of talent, and training good engineering is EXTREMELY expensive per student. I could not see how it was possible to create that many engineers of any quality.

4. The thing we notice about Indian engineers at my company
is that the caste system prevents them, without remedial help by us, from getting the hands on experience necessary to be good engineers. Our best engineers are ones who grew up on a farm or in a situation in which their parent worked on cars etc. Many got lab experience through internships etc. In general Indian engineers are very good in math, but they do not have the feel for how things work.

Our school system allows many opportunities for such experience. Many schools do robot competition which is excellent training in mechanical engineering and computer programming. My youngest daughter did Lego League which gives wonderful programming training (she decided that engineering was not for her from this experience).

The solar car competition is another excellent example of this type of training.

Our company's experience with outsourcing my type of job has been very negative (extenisve training of individuals who went to other jobs). It actually has been a benefit to me that this has happened.

That is not to say that I have not known many excellent Indian engineers in college, as instructors, and as coworkers.

6. Absolutely, I have known a lot of excellent Indian and Chinese engineers

Talent and experience exist in all countries and ethnic groups. My point is more the huge number of engineers doesn't make a lot of sense.
