JAPAN'S decision to send a patrol boat as escort to the whaling fleet needs to be assessed so that we know what such a patrol boat really is. Australia has a light naval vessel known as a patrol boat. However, Japan applies euphemisms to its military. The escort being sent with the Japanese whaling fleet is not what we might imagine from its modest-sounding description.

The Hayabusa-class patrol boat is a powerful guided-missile interception vessel. With a speed of 46 knots, three gun housings, and surface-to-surface missiles: it is a warship. Another class, the long-range Shikishima, carries a helicopter that could also be used to spot whale pods.

With Japan muscling up for a clash as it prosecutes a flagrantly disingenous "scientific" whale hunt, Australia has the prospect of Japanese military action coming to bear on Australian and New Zealand citizens in waters that we have declared an Australian whale sanctuary.



I lived in Okinawa for 2 years the ocean is just another resource to rape & pillage in their eyes! Now they are having all kinds of problems for using that safe Nuke power the land is polluted the sea is radiated they cannot even dump the sludge from the sewer treatment plants due to the radioactive content in the sludge.
