Lawmaker Seeks Drug Tests For State Officials
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio Democratic lawmaker is proposing to drug-test elected officials, in response to a Republican-backed bill calling for drug-testing of welfare recipients.

Rep. Robert Hagan's bill would require statewide officeholders, legislators, members of Gov. John Kasich's jobs board and recipients of federal bailout money to pay for their testing for un-prescribed pharmaceuticals, illegal drugs and alcohol.

Officials testing positive would have to undergo treatment or be booted from office.

Hagan says it's hypocritical for lawmakers to say they're protecting taxpayer money by testing welfare recipients for drugs if they themselves won't submit to testing.

The drug war sucks.

Forced testing is wrong.

2. while I can appreciate his motive, this is going the wrong way
and encouraging the failed 'war' on (some) drugs.

6. Well if they are going to pass
this type of law on the welfare folks, and we assume that will pass, than I have no problem with those that pass laws be accountable in the same way.

3. Yeah, great debate tactic
But I would rather not see any such laws passed. The presumption that we have let take hold in this country that all are presumed criminal unless they prove otherwise is poisonous to liberty.

5. It's about time!
Maybe when they have to piss in a cup for their paycheck, they'll think twice about forcing others to.

oh, and it should have to be a observed test, not a private. They should have to be observed since we know most of them will cheat....they do it in their daily lives, I'm sure they'll cheat if not observed.

10. Well, I mean, nothing could be as intrusive
and such an inherent invasion of privacy as blood or urine testing.

13. They buy into the welfare Cadillac queen
Rush Limbaugh lies. Above all they don't want someone getting something the "don't deserve". The undeserving include any people of color receiving food stamps or assistance of any kind. If your brother in law gets food stamps or disability it is alright -cause he is deserving. We are surrounded by these sorts of judgmental idiots here.

11. Drug Testing in Florida
turned out to be a farce with only 1 or 2% of welfare recipients testing positive and the state was forced to pick up the tab for testing, costing Florida thousands of dollars. Why would Ohio choose the same foolish path? It is also blatant bigotry to assume that people facing hard times are ALL drug users, which leads one to believe that people suggesting such a thing may have a wee bit of a problem themselves.
