British Foreign Secretary breached Convention on Human Rights
Minister relaxed on judge reaction
July 21, 2004

"THE Federal Government was not embarrassed by a British judge's reaction to allegations Australia failed to act on human rights concerns at the now-defunct Woomera detention centre, Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said today.
Lord Chadwick is one of three Court of Appeal judges hearing Alamdar and Muntazar Bakhtiari's claim that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw breached the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Bakhtiari boys, now aged 15 and 13, are claiming in the Court of Appeal in London that Mr Straw failed to protect them from inhumane and degrading treatment at the hands of Australian immigration authorities when he refused them asylum.

The brothers were turned away from the British consulate in Melbourne on July 18, 2002, after seeking asylum while on the run following a mass breakout from the Woomera detention centre in South Australia."
