"May Allah forgive us. In our pursuit to fly high the flag of Islam
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 12:52 PM by Hoping4Change
we have forgotten how to be good human beings. Muslims today are more interested in flaunting Islam as an identity symbol and do not treat Islam as a moral code that must restrict our choices and actions even if our political and material interests are hurt as a result of our moral choices."

The following OpEd is from alt.Muslim.com, written by an American Muslim scholar dismayed by the deafening silence in the Muslim world when Arab militias in Darfur murder, rape and destroy thousands of lives.

2. Thanks for pointing that out. I am going to make it a point to
read his blog as I really value people who go against the prevailing currents in their respective communities and who are more interested in getting at the truth rather than being concerned with appearances.

5. Did you see the link I posted in lbn for Muslim Wakeup?
That might interest you: http://www.muslimwakeup.com/mainarchive/000959.php

My sense is that among North American muslims there has been a growing awareness of the crisis in Sudan.

I've also seen some activity in the blogosphere--for instance, somebody linked to Asieh Man|, a Malay blogger who's been regularly covering Sudan.[br /

3. he makes some excellent points!
One could write in the name of plenty of other religions, and the statement about people "flaunting" it as "an identity symbol" would still be right on. (Actually, I'm passing this on to some Unitarians I know, who have been arguing along the same lines -- thanks for the link!)

4. Now that you mention about being able to write in names
or other religions, I realize that is why I appreciated his remarks. It is a criticism about how his or any other religion is used for other ends than the one intended.
