Last week's reversal of millwright Linda Gilbert's $21-million sexual harassment judgment against DaimlerChrysler AG was widely anticipated, but lawyers across the state remain divided about its meaning.

Is the state Supreme Court's 4-3 decision the overdue comeuppance for a lawyer known for stretching both the truth and the rules of evidence? Is it an indictment of the ineptitude of DaimlerChrysler's lawyers?

Or is it just the latest blow in an ugly partisan vendetta four Republican state Supreme Court justices have been waging against plaintiff's lawyers in general -- and Gilbert's attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, in particular?

The only reasonable answer, when you consider all the evidence, is: All of the above.
