Barack Obama's Remarks to the Democratic National Convention

Published: July 27, 2004

he following is the text of Barack Obama’s keynote address to the Democratic National Convention, as recorded by The New York Times.

BARACK OBAMA. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Dick Durbin. You make us all proud.

On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, Land of Lincoln, let me express my deepest gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention.

Tonight is a particular honor for me because — let’s face it — my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely. My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. His father — my grandfather — was a cook, a domestic servant to the British.

But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place, America, that shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.

Mods? Is that acceptable, or do I have to do it this way??

I'm no mod, but, no, you can't post the whole thing, I don't believe.

2. Regrettably the Times account is copyrighted.
Hence it fits the four pargraph rule and you were right to limit the excerpt. For those who do not wish to register for the Times, here is a link to this outstanding speech from his website.

4. Reposting the no-registration-required link
to the full text: http://www.obamaforillinois.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC...

I'd not heard Obama before; and the skeptic in me was ready to dismiss all the hype I've heard about him. But that skeptic was silenced by Obama's words. He is a brilliant speaker.

This speech deserves to be read and commented on by more than 3 people...

5. Our local paper
The Daily Messenger Post ran the whole text in an entire page spread with blazoned central quote about "We are the United States of America".

Obviously it really knocked the mildly Democratic socks off our editors
with incredible force. The dour GOP letter writers will be busy over that I am sure, but I have a full print copy where it counts.

Speeches like that should be run as ads and in media blitzes. This is John Edwards full positive attack on steroids and really devastated the hate and division campaign of the standard Bush fare- which at least threatened to discourage and muddle voters.

Al's speech should be excerpted as many others. Kerry could almost go on vacation yet his slamdunk tonite set off the electoral nuke we can carry to November.

All hopes so far wildly fulfilled. Hope lives. The Right people cringe.
