Margaret Cho on Michelle Malkin
In Defense of Michelle Malkin

Michelle Malkin, the author of the controversial book, In Defense of Internment, speaks from University of California at Berkeley, fiercely trying to defend her position against the loud and angry demonstration outside protesting her appearance. Malkin's views are incredibly unpopular, especially on such a liberal campus. Her take on the racial politics of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II is quite outrageous, especially for an Asian American. Even though she has a white name, it doesn't make her so.

She is living proof that bigotry has gone multicultural. She claims that the comparison of internment to the current racial profiling of Arabs and Arab Americans is unfair and a foolhardy tool of the left, who are gambling with the safety of America in order to remain politically correct. Advocating racism in order to secure our borders is part of life during a war, and Malkin is here to remind us again and again how we are at war.

She ponders why affirmative action is perceived as a good thing and scrutinizing the Arab names on airline passenger lists is a bad thing. She is infuriated that the left keep on playing the internment card, seriously compromising homeland security with their insistence on those pesky civil rights.

1. Minor quibble
Bigotry hasn't gone multicultural. It always was.

2. She was chosen by the VRWC to carry on the work of Ann Coulter
who has become a quite unsympathetic monster. Maybe people will like little Michelle better when she pouts and almost cries on camera!

6. IIRC her husband is Jewish (please debunk, if untrue)
Why not as him about the protective, harmless "internment" of the Jews in Nazi Germany?

8. James Wolcott on Malkin:
(Excerpt: Salon interview on his new book, "Attack Poodles.")

Who would you identify as the worst attack poodle?

I can't pick one. For a certain type of pious smarminess, you can't do better than David Frum, because he pretends to care. I think that if I were going to do an updated book, I'd do a whole section on Michelle Malkin, who I think is one of the nastiest pieces of work around. That is a classic case of the attack poodle machinery at work. She brings out this book, it starts to get talked about on the Internet, talk radio, then she's on all the shows.

She seems completely manufactured.

Completely manufactured! There are all these people writing all these very good critiques of her history, in terms of internment of the Japanese, and how she got the history wrong. And I'm sure she did. But to me that's not the real purpose of the book. One of the things I always do with the attack poodles is, I ask myself, why are they doing this now? Why this, why now? One of the things she's doing with the internment is she's laying the groundwork for all sorts of ethnic considerations and profiling. That's part of what she's doing, because if you justify the Japanese internment, you can then justify the internment of other people. If you look at her other writing, she is big on racial profiling.

So how do you think it works? Do you think that Michelle Malkin is smart enough to know that she's laying a groundwork, or do you think someone's coaching her?

They don't necessarily need the coaching. You see that with people who follow a guru, the guru teaches up to a point, but then at a certain point the guru doesn't have to say anymore because they know.

I don't want to make it sound as if they're all simply assigned hit men, because a lot of them just are into their shameless careers. One of the things you find out about people is that there is a real addiction to being on TV. And once people start appearing on TV, they can't bear not appearing on TV. If you get to a certain point, the car will pick you up, take you to the studio, you go in, do your bit, the car brings you home. If you watch cable news on cable TV, you see the same people, sometimes the same person on two different networks the same night. That car service is really working overtime.

A lot of what these people do for projects, is simply another way of getting a round of TV appearances. Like Ann Coulter has a book coming out -- it's about something like, "How to Talk to Liberals, if You Must" or something like that, and I thought, that's real desperation, that's sort of when you really run out of topics.

9. Malkin is a real freakshow...
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 05:42 AM by ReadTomPaine
The GOP know the value of the old 10 in 1 sideshow it seems as they actively model their talking head pundits after some of the circus freaks of old.

When Malkin opens her mouth, you can never be sure what's going to come out. Maybe it's going to be a talking point, or perhaps some hate speech, or just the usual flights of bats and swarms of snakes. It's really hard to guess sometimes.

They know she's an ambulatory car-accident to people watching her and they milk her freak factor like a cheap john getting every last minute from a prostitute. If she weren't so hateful, I'd feel sorry for her.

10. I am married to a wonderful Filipino
and she, and her family are ashamed of Malkin.

We just can't find the word in Tagalog (Filipino language) for "Uncle Tom", but if we do, it will apply to Michelle.

11. well, Michelle wasn't there ...
and my family was. Everyone, from the grandparents to the toddlers, was sent into internment -- even though they lived (and in many cases, were born into) a democratic society. And you can bet that a lot of the people who remember the detention camps do NOT want this to happen to any other group. In fact, that was one of the conditions when the Japanese-Canadians settled up with the government. Their main concern wasn't financial compensation -- they wanted an apology, and the assurance that this wouldn't be done to anyone else, Japanese or otherwise.

My dad, who's usually silent on his experiences, took the unprecedented step of giving the local paper a page-long interview in the hopes that it would increase public sympathy for Muslims and Arabs in our community. He was furious that anybody might forget that a lot of innocent people were harmed by suspicion.

Michelle, bless her little heart, can say whatever she likes (one of the freedoms fought for by so many over the years) -- only her "street cred" is microscopic compared to that of my parents, on this issue.
