Molly Ivins: Our Petulant President
We all had our debate moments, but the one that stunned me was, "It's (Iraq is) hard work. I see it on the TV screens."

Watching it on TV -- boy, that is tough work all right. And what was the "hard work" thing about? Did Rove poll and find out people think the president vacations too much?

I also came to a full stop after the one about sending troops to die. "I never -- when I was running -- when we had the debate in 2000, never dreamt I'd be doing that." He never dreamt it?

It never occurred to him? Was this man prepared for the job? Help!

I lean to the "bubble president" theory of Bush's peevish, petulant performance in debate. They've kept him surrounded by people who keep telling him he's great. I blame Karl Rove, of course. Bush is not used to being questioned. In Bob Woodward's book "Bush at War," the president is quoted: "I'm the commander in chief, see, I don't need to explain, I do not need to explain why I say things. That's the interesting part about being president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation."

2. I forgot about Bush 's " I do not need to explain" to Woodward.
Of course, that explains his attitude in the debate. You can always count on Molly to nail it.

Thanks again for my Molly fix.

7. If Paris Was Running the Country
we'd look more fashionable, at least.

12. I know Paris Hilton.
Paris Hilton is a friend of mine. And George Dubya Bush is no Paris Hilton.

She's adorable.

4. What a Shock!
You mean to tell me that being leader of the free world is not an easy job? I'm reminded of a friend that had gone for 15 years after graduating from college working in his Dad's firm.

His dad retired, sold the company, and junior had to find a real job. He complained incessantly. It seemed that these other companies expected you to show up every day, on time, and do something productive. He had no experience working under the sort of scrutiny that the rest of us have lived with forever.

These days my friend is working for a modest hourly wage and hoping that Dad kicks off soon and makes him the lottery winner.

5. "I don't feel like I owe anybody an explanation."
That may well be the most outrageous thing this guy ever said. This "CEO president" happens to report to a Board of Directors known as the American people. You'd think Little Georgie Biznissman would understand this...

9. Did he...
...ever really have to report to (i.e. be accountable to) anyone in his business ventures? For that matter, given his track record (academic, business, government), can we be sure he ever even understood this idea?

10. Silverspoon frat boy.
W is still that guy. If he would have had more Press Conferences and a Press that wasn't kissin' his royal ass, Americans would have known what a dense, spoiled, asshole the guy is. All of his life he has been shielded and coddled. Why would this apppointed job be any different?
