BlueEyedSon: Bush and the "culture of life"
Background: Bush couches his anti-choice message in something he calls the "culture of life." That sounds pretty good (morally, ethically, intellectually, etc.) until you realize just how Orwellian the phrase is when used by this callous, borderline homicidal man. It seems the only lives protected in Bush's culture of life are those of in utero fetuses.

1. Bush as (joyful) executioner.
Gov Bush of Texas signed 152 death warrants for convicted criminals, more than another governor in modern times. Typically his presentation of the case by legal council to him was no more than 30 minutes. He commuted only 1 death sentence. Bush is famously said to have mocked Carla Faye Tucker , who became born again while on death row, upon describing her pleas to him to spare her life.

2. Bush as warrior.
Clearly in light of recent events, the Iraq war was absolutely avoidable, if you assume the stated grounds for war true and accurate. An estimated 13,000 Iraqis, many of which were civilians and children have been killed. Many more will die due to destroyed infrastructure and poor sanitation. Key aspects of the Geneva Conventions regarding protection of civilians and proportionality of force are blatantly ignored. The torture and use of deadly force in Abu Ghraib are not unknown to Bush and his senior management team.

Our own soldiers were sent into battle (which was predicted to devolve in to urban guerrilla warfare) with too small a force to guaranty security, and without body armor (despite Kerry's "waffling" the 87 billion was passed, so Kerry cannot be blamed).

3. Bush as fetal protector
Where is the consistence of his position w/r/t frozen embryos from fertility clinics. If the embryo's life is valuable, shouldn't the US government conscript willing Christian women to incubate and bear these "children"? the only logical alternatives are permanent freezing or eventual disposal. And what of the lives that could be saved by understanding fetal stem cell biotechnology?

4. Bush as environmental steward
The roll back of environmental regulation under Bush will lead to the death of many animals, and perhaps the extinction of a few species of US wildlife. The local toxins deposited in our water, earth and air will resulting the deaths of US citizens. Ignoring global issues like climate change (i.e. warming) will result in death of many third world people who depend exclusively on local farming in extremely specific climatic conditions. Some meteorologists believe that the increase in quantify and severity of tropical storms (which do kill) in the southern US may be the result of global warming.

(Many references are from "the President of Good and Evil" by Peter Singer.)

1. Bush* uses the phrase "culture of life" to appeal to Catholics, but

to Catholics it means to oppose war, the death penalty, and euthanasia, not only abortion.

Rove has cynically trained Bush* to say "the culture of life" in his speeches, just as his speechwriter throws in little bits to appeal to evangelicals and fundamentalists.
