Bush’s civil rights record

This reeks, even for Washington’s toxic partisan hijinks.

The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will not discuss a 180-page report on President Bush’s abysmal record on the subject of civil rights until after the election.

If you want to read the report, go to www.usccr.gov . Just don’t expect any one of the seven commissioners to talk about it.

Odd, one would think that the commissioner’s duty was to the people, not the president.

Yet there’s something even more fascinating at work. It was fine for U.S. weapons inspectors to tell the world last week that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, thus undermining the president’s reason for fighting the war. However, it would be in bad form this week for the commission to discuss with Americans what staffers meant when they wrote the president “has neither exhibited leadership on pressing civil rights issues, nor taken actions that matched his words.” It appears that Republican operatives are more worried about obfuscating the president’s domestic agenda than they are about defending the war.
