Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV, watching her beloved "ancien regime" crumble at the hands of violent revolutionaries, was said to have remarked: Apres nous, le deluge. After us, the flood. After us, the End of the World. Now the debates are over and John Kerry has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is much better qualified to lead our country out of its current mess we find ourselves in than the current administration, which by and large created that mess to begin with; now that the debates are over and the pResident is no longer hobbled by the inconvenient tradition of face-to-face discussions of policy with his opponent, and can once again return to his "comfort zone" of sniping from the protective cover of surrogates and play-acting in front of a preselected crowd; now that the debates are over and the polls are showing that the American public might actually be capable of making the grown up choice of spinachy fiscal discipline and zuchini-esque multilateral diplomacy over the merengue of tax cuts and the grease-laden hamburgers of military pre-emption... Now that we are in the "red zone" of the election, we on the Left must brace ourselves for the next three weeks, because apres ca, le deluge. After this, the deluge of irresponsible, negative and malicious character attacks on John Kerry begins. After this, media complicity in building up this cowardly farce of a President and tearing down the military service of an honorable man begins. After this, the threats to minority and normally disenfranchised voters by brownshirted goonsquads begin. After this, massive voter fraud, manipulation of electronic "black box" voting machines, purging of poll-lists and the willful destruction of voter registration forms begin. After this, the last desperate attempts of this illegitimate regime to hold onto its ill-begotten monopoly on power begin. In other words, Democracy as we know it will not be safe (assuming it ever was) until John Kerry is sworn in, after a four-year interregnary court-appointed junta, on Jan. 15th. And apres CA... well let's just say no open-air motorcades, please, mister Catholic President from Massachusetts! These motherf_ckers pissed in the soup of democracy and complain that it tastes sour. They won't stop at anything. So dig in yer heels, boys and girls, it's going to be a wild ride.
