Now the soaring price of college tuition, war in Iraq and persistent rumors that the draft will be reinstated seem to be driving college-aged voters to the polls in numbers not seen in 12 years.
Three in five young people are paying close attention to the 2004 presidential campaign, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. Rock the Vote said it has signed up 1 million people for the coming election.
Nationwide registration figures aren't available, but by any count, millions of names have been added to voters rolls. In California, registration for the Nov. 2 election ends Monday.
Both major political parties are working harder than ever to attract college-aged voters, especially in the battleground states of Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan. California is not thought to be in play.
