Wasn’t Jesus A Liberal?

<snip>

Jesus was the ultimate liberal progressive revolutionary of all history. The conservative religious and social structure that He defied hated and crucified Him. They examined His life and did not like what they saw. He aligned Himself with the poor and the oppressed.

He challenged the religious orthodoxy of His day. He advocated pacifism and loving our enemies. He liberated women and minorities from oppression. He healed on the Sabbath and forgave adulterers and prostitutes. He associated with drunks and other social outcasts. He rebuked the religious right of His day because they embraced the letter of the law instead of the Spirit. He loved sinners and called them to Himself.

Jesus was the original Liberal. He was a progressive, and He was judged and hated for it. It was the self-righteous religionists that He rebuked and He called them hypocrites.

4. Exactly
And if Jesus were to walk the earth today, the "religious right" would be the first group to yell crucify him.

10. exactly. It's very convenient to worship liberals once they're
safely disposed of.

6. Absolutely - my thoughts EXACTLY. Jesus was the original liberal.
He was killed for it by the a conservative backlash during his time. Jesus left a liberal legacy for all people to follow. In many ways he was more liberal than even I could ever be. The Hypocrites have now co-opted Jesus and have attempted to make him into one of them - but we know better.

7. Jesus was a Capricorn
An old Kristofferson song, I can recall some of it...

"Long hair, sandals and a funky bunch of friends,
if he comes back they'll nail him up again..."

Something like that. :eyes:
been many years since I've played that old record...and now I don't even have a turntable. Hundreds of LPs & no way to listen. Sigh.

9. His message just doesn't resonate with theself-serving born-agains
who seem only to want personal "salvation" (eg afterlife) which they think they can have even while rejecting Jesus's preaching. They seem to think that a few passages interpreted as anti gay are more important than the many many messages about the wealthy/greed/ vs tending to the needs of those in need... they only like Jesus's broad and nonjudgemental approach when it applies to their own transgressions - but feel compelled to reject that approach when it comes to others. It is the ultimate "feel good" approach they take - a two-fer... get salvation but also keep that vindictave, holier than thou approach to others - the ultimate "in group" vs. others.

Personally I think we are in an age of "false prophits", and that those folks, not unlike the teachers in the Madras's are leading people who are looking for religion - actually further and further away from "the light" - the ultimate deception... under the guise of "saving their soul" - they are lead through behaviors and actions further and further away from God. I find it rather tragic.

12. Excuse please--the Twelve Disciples were also Jews
And so were most of the original followers. It was later that they decided to accept non-Jews wholeheartedly (Acts, Chapter 10)

13. Certainly he was, and
look what the masses--the ones he tried to help--did to him, and look how his message has been corrupted.

16. Yes, he was. Why?
Does the Christian Right have anything to do with Christ? I thought they were about hating people, division, and screwing the poor. That clearly is against Christ.

17. Yes, He was a liberal!
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 01:14 PM by Dyedinthewoolliberal
And yes, the right has co-opted everything Jesus stood/stands for. Even for those of us not particularly religious what Jesus taught us was valuable, good stuff, centered around care and concern for our fellow man. Ask any fundie who states support for the invasion of Iraq this question;
"Who would Jesus bomb?"
They cannot answer the question........
