Daily Endorsement Tally: A Trio of Swingers for Each

NEW YORK In a fairly quiet day on the newspaper endorsement front, Sen. John Kerry picked up the biggest prize, gaining the support of The Virginian-Pilot (in the military-heavy city of Norfolk. Once thought to be safe for President Bush, Virginia is now back in play by some estimates.

In E&P's exclusive daily tally of endorsements, the Democrat also picked up two other papers in swing states: the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore., and the Concord (N.H.) Monitor. Kerry now leads the president 58-44 in E&P's accounting.

Bush also picked up three papers today, and they, too, are in swing states. In West Virginia, he got the nod from The Intelligencer in Wheeling and the Charleston Daily Mail, and he was endorsed by The Chippewa Herald in Chippewa Falls, Wisc.

Norfolk, VA Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, etc., Virginia...big military area. Also may mean good news for David Ashe (D), my cousin whose running for Congress. Go John and David!

In poll after poll, Americans say that the nation is on the wrong track. They are right. It is time for fresh leadership at the Pentagon, time for a president who will hold subordinates accountable, time for a chief executive with the wisdom to recognize fatal miscalculations.

If you want the same results, you keep doing the same thing. We do not doubt George Bush’s good intentions. We doubt his judgment. The results speak for themselves.

John Kerry has demonstrated the personal courage and intellectual stamina to put the nation on a sounder course.
