2. As an anti-Bush pro-Kerry voter, I have some problems with this article. |
|
OK - Let's start with trying to be fair.
I agree with the premise that Bush does not care about the average guy.
I also think that a Kerry administration, particularly in terms of health care, might make your life better.
And I think it must be difficult to deal with a serious health issue such as a heart attack. And very expensive.
I am absolutely frustrated with Bush's corporate giveaways.
But, average people do not go broke on a two person family income of 80K, in Kentucky.
I really, really, really think that you need to take a major major reassessment of how you manage money and forget everything you ever learned about money, and start from scratch.
I realize that bad things can happen unexpectedly to anyone.
But, my husband and I (we are in your age group and the two of us now live in NYC - so I can sympathize with NY expenses) lived off savings comfortably for two years while he went to grad school in Pittsburgh with no income except his 5K from his internship incoming for two whole years. And we owned a house and paid our bills on time.
And neither of us ever got anything from our families.
I just think that you need to relearn money management.
Lesson one: Never buy a new car.
Lesson two: Never buy a car you can't pay for with cash.
Lesson three: Never own more than one car.
Lesson four: Drive your car 'til the wheels fall off. I bought my '91 Geo Prizm the year we were married ('92) and still am driving it and I'm too cheap to replace the bent fender or the drivers door - so climb in from the passanger side.
Lesson five: Since you cannot handle credit cards (you should only have them if you pay in full each month) cut them up and keep one which you stick in the freezer in a zip lock filled with water.
Lesson six: Don't eat out, go to a coffee shop or buy ice cream or any grocery gourmet foods until all your bills are paid off.
Lesson seven: Don't ever try to keep up with the Jonses; if all they care about is your appearance of wealth then why would you want them to like you anyway?
Lesson eight: After you have learned these other lessons, declare bankruptcy and start fresh so you won't feel the stress of financial burden.
This year is the first year in our lives where we will be able to pay taxes on the 80k+ range of income - yet we have substantial savings and are living in NYC - and I have us worked out on a three year budget to pay off our minimal walk up coop in exactly four years from closing.
As someone who gets as stressed out from bills as you do - (I long ago dated a guy for four years but broke up with him because I found I footed his bills too often and the stress made me cry.) I am telling you that you need a drastic lifestyle change!
And - you can make the lifestyle change if you learn to take pride in being cheaper (thriftier, more frugal) than anyone else you know.
