Milliken gives a voice to moderates in GOP

Former Gov. William Milliken's summons to the Republican Party to step back from its extremist path received nationwide attention this week.

And with good reason. It was a clarion call for common sense.
Not surprisingly, those in charge of the party's headlong plunge into international isolationism and domestic disaster were more than happy to heap disdain on the popular, lifelong GOP moderate.


But in so doing they perhaps unwittingly helped him make his point: In the present-day Republican Party, as in too many places across the nation, there is increasingly little room for divergent thought and opinion. Those who dare to express independent views or propose alternative suggestions are set upon and savaged as ignorant and unpatriotic.

Hopefully, the Bill Millikens of the nation will help us correct our course.
