Political passions are burning white hot as Nov. 2 nears. Americans realize what is at stake: the United States' ability to lead in the world, protect its citizens at home, preserve its treasured liberties, and leave a legacy of hope and opportunity. George W. Bush's presidency has put all that at risk. Sen. John Kerry proposes a sharp course change.

  • Detroit News (Michigan) - Endorsed Bush in 2000.

Four years ago, the choice was clear. We endorsed George W. Bush based on his promises of fiscal conservatism, limited government and prudence in foreign affairs.

Today, we sadly acknowledge that the president has failed to deliver on those promises.
    ....
So we are left with a decision we detest but are nonetheless compelled to make: The Detroit News will not lend its endorsement to a candidate who has made too many mistakes, nor to one who offers a governing philosophy that we reject.
    ....
    and much more

    http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/editorials/index.ssf?/base/news-1/1098600905155542.xml

    ...
In 2000, we endorsed Mr. Bush, praising his skill at building coalitions and his willingness to learn from mistakes. He has disappointed us on both counts. Despite the closeness of that election, the president has failed to reach to the center. He has built an administration that seems loath to correct course.

Our expectation four years ago was that Mr. Bush would be a good partner for Louisiana. Certainly he understands the oil industry and its importance to our state. But his administration has been cool to the state's coastal restoration and flood-control needs, and misguided steel tariffs did significant economic harm to South Louisiana ports.

All of this makes us unwilling to urge Mr. Bush's re-election.

    24. American Conservative Magazine!
    Surprising one!

    http://www.amconmag.com/2004_11_08/cover1.html

    "Kerry’s the One

    By Scott McConnell

There is little in John Kerry’s persona or platform that appeals to conservatives. The flip-flopper charge—the centerpiece of the Republican campaign against Kerry—seems overdone, as Kerry’s contrasting votes are the sort of baggage any senator of long service is likely to pick up. (Bob Dole could tell you all about it.) But Kerry is plainly a conventional liberal and no candidate for a future edition of Profiles in Courage. In my view, he will always deserve censure for his vote in favor of the Iraq War in 2002.

    <snip>

Bush has behaved like a caricature of what a right-wing president is supposed to be, and his continuation in office will discredit any sort of conservatism for generations. The launching of an invasion against a country that posed no threat to the U.S., the doling out of war profits and concessions to politically favored corporations, the financing of the war by ballooning the deficit to be passed on to the nation’s children, the ceaseless drive to cut taxes for those outside the middle class and working poor: it is as if Bush sought to resurrect every false 1960s-era left-wing cliché about predatory imperialism and turn it into administration policy. Add to this his nation-breaking immigration proposal—Bush has laid out a mad scheme to import immigrants to fill any job where the wage is so low that an American can’t be found to do it—and you have a presidency that combines imperialist Right and open-borders Left in a uniquely noxious cocktail."

yes -- thanx - we have that in mags -- but it's impt (factually) to note that there are actually SEVEN endorsements -- only one is for Kerry; one for Bush; one for "staying home"; and the rest for third-party candidate.

But can't say that the MAGAZINE endorsed Kerry -- because it didn't. Majority endorsed other candidates.

    28. here are a few...
    Kerry

The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel endorsed Kerry on Oct. 24:

"We expected him to forge bipartisan solutions to problems while keeping this nation secure and fiscally sound. This president has utterly failed to fulfill our expectations."

The Bismarck (N.D.) Tribune endorsed Kerry on Oct. 24:

"Kerry's lofty goal of restoring America as a respected powerhouse instead of neighborhood bully is an admirable one, one that would bode well for an agricultural state such as North Dakota, hoping to broaden its export market. ... Bush's finest hour may have been the leadership he showed in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America. But soon that leadership evolved into policies that too often ate into personal freedoms Americans cherish."

Lansing (Mich.) State Journal endorsed Kerry on Oct. 24:

"We reject the president's claim that this country is safer because we invaded Iraq. Mission accomplished? No. Mission diverted. George W. Bush should not be re-elected. We urge voters to elect John Kerry as the nation's 44th president."

The Flint (Mich.) Journal endorsed Kerry on Oct. 24:

"Bush, who turned out to be more conservative than compassionate and who has made the nation even more divided, must be held accountable for these failings. John Kerry is the only serious alternative to four more years of this flawed presidency. We are putting our faith in his potential to do better."

    32. This post should include Bush endorsements
We don't want to ignore reality, right? And I want to know which newspapers are endorsing Bush, and why.

Here's one list that has both:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-4572443,00.html

This one just kills me, like, it's from The Onion, right? Too bad, it's real.

The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colo., endorsed President Bush on Oct. 24:

``... Americans ... will be casting a vote for the person they deem most capable of protecting this nation from the apocalyptic dangers of Islamofascist terror. And the best man to carry out that transcendent governmental responsibility, in our view, is George W. Bush.''

    34. sorry, didn't catch that
Here's another weird one: (from http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/10/24/endorsements/)

Oshkosh Northwestern, Oshkosh, Wisconsin., endorsed Bush on Friday: "Bush may have room for improvement, but the sitting president is always an easy target. What he has going for him is four years of a track record of acting as he promised he would. It's rare in a politician. But it's crucial for a president."

    ---------
I don't think I've read anyone saying that Bush has governed as he said he would during the 2000 campaign. Quite the contrary. Some conservatives make excuses for him because of 9/11 but to imply he was consistent with his promises is worse than laughable.

    John Kerry for president

    In our opinion
    10-19-2004

The next president of the United States will come into office in January at a time of desperate need.

On employment, the next president must find ways to replace the manufacturing jobs flowing out of the country. On homeland security, he must tighten our borders and ports of entry. On the environment, he must be willing to think first about protecting people and the quality of air and water, instead of reflexively catering to industry.

And he must possess the ability to win allies, both at home and abroad, by keeping an open mind that is willing to set aside old rivalries and petty disputes in the cause of serving a higher mission, be that mission improving the health care of Americans or defeating international terrorists.

Because John Kerry is best suited to this job, The Anniston Star endorses him for president.

The Massachusetts senator offers the most able mind, the better set of diplomatic skills, the wiser plans for the economy and a calm but tough demeanor exhibited during his career and this campaign — particularly during the three debates with his rival, President George W. Bush.

Unfortunately, the next president’s job is made all the more difficult thanks to the current president’s disastrous folly in Iraq, where 120,000 of our troops sit on a powder keg threatening to further destabilize the Middle East.

Kerry would be a better president than Bush
    October 24, 2004

In a speech before his pivotal first debate with President Bush, Sen. John Kerry acknowledged that some voters question whether it is prudent, in the middle of a war, to “change horses in midstream."

He had an answer for that. “When your horse is headed down toward the waterfall, or when your horse is drowning, it’s a good time to change horses."

That may be campaign rhetoric, but it makes a lot of horse sense. We’re headed in the wrong direction -- not only in Iraq but on many other fronts as well. Kerry has the ability to turn things around. The Tuscaloosa News endorses him in the Nov. 2 general election.
    ~snip~
    .
    .
    .

Bush squandered his chances to become a unifying and effective leader at home and abroad. Kerry, we strongly believe, would make the best of his opportunities.

    52. National: The New Yorker (this something new)
This article is a total bash on Mr. Bush Jr. with history included by a magazine which normally does not do endorsements, one and two does not write about politics. This is a must read!

    54. What about the papers in Wisconsin, esp. Milwaukee, Madison...
and Green Bay? Has anyone heard from them? They seem to be holding out on giving an endorsement until what they see is the right time.

    Economist Magazine Endorses Kerry

    By IAN PHILLIPS
    Associated Press Writer

LONDON (AP) -- The Economist magazine endorsed John Kerry's candidacy for the White House on Thursday, citing what it called the "sheer incompetence" of post-war Iraq planning, and the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, which it said would "haunt America for years to come."

The conservative magazine, which backed the Iraq war, said it was supporting Kerry "with a heavy heart," but that the errors of the Bush administration couldn't be ignored. "Our confidence in him has been shattered," it said in a scathing editorial posted on its Web site.

The Economist last endorsed a Democrat in 1992, when Bill Clinton ran for the presidency. In 2000, it supported Bush.

"This year's battle has been between two deeply flawed men," it said. "George Bush, who has been a radical, transforming president but who has never seemed truly up to the job ... and John Kerry, who often seems to have made up his mind conclusively about something only once, and that was 30 years ago
