Did court give Bush push into PULL?
Former President George H.W. Bush is defending his son against suggestions that Dubya's early community service wasn't voluntary - but court-ordered.

<snip>

The White House says all five people quoted in the article are wrong.

"The President served at Project PULL because he wanted to," said spokesman Trent Duffy.

Bush 41 admitted to us through a spokesman that, yes, he had asked White, who died in 1988, to take on his then-26-year-old son. But Poppy denied suggestions that his boy was sentenced to do community service.

"The allegations that my asking John White to 'take in' the President was judge-mandated are totally untrue," Bush the Elder said. "John White was one of the President's biggest fans - he often talked about their close relationship."

"We didn't know what kind of trouble he'd been in, only that he'd done something that required him to put in the time," White's assistant Althia Turner told Knight Ridder reporter Meg Laughlin.
