Dangers of Echo Chambers
There's an article on Salon.com by Andrew Leonard about why perhaps we're all so bedazzled by the result.

Trapped in the echo chamber
The Internet makes it easy to find people we agree with. After Election Day 2004, maybe it's time to kick that habit.

As I survey the wreckage of the lefty blogosphere Wednesday morning, it is easy to wonder: How could I, how could we, have been so wrong? How could the confidence and jubilation generated by the thriving communities at blogs like Atrios' Eschaton and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga's Daily Kos so thoroughly have evaporated into self-recrimination and despair? (To be sure, there have also been eloquent calls to arms.)

1. I tried doing this on the internet,
and was threatened and ridiculed when I went to open forums. I got sick and tired of having to explain Islam again and again, only to be told I should be dead (and that they'd be glad to help with that-thank heavens I didn't give any information about my location!) and that I should 'go back to my country' (my ancestors came over on the Mayflower).

So going online and trying to reach out to others isn't going to work, imho.

I do try and talk to people face to face.

2. sounds like he's looking for excuses
I never thought that things were all rosey, as he would insist. I think he's just looking for a reason to justify his suprise.
