I was uncertain whether to guffaw or to express outrage against an editorial in the Nov. 3rd edition of the NYT which claimed: “But a leader who was prepared to make political sacrifices in order to stake a claim to that middle ground could be laying the foundation for a new national consensus that might finally bring the nation's social wars to an end. Mr. Bush could be that leader. He could be the uniter he promised to be, then failed to become, four years ago. He could put an end to a period in national history when too many people go to the polls on Election Day convinced that victory for the other side would mean disaster for the nation. A lot of voters felt that way on Tuesday, and now Mr. Bush has the chance to show them they were wrong.”
Discussions within democratic forums suggest a substantial segment of the party simply refuse to engage another Bush administration. We are tired of the lies, deceptions, deceits, and misrepresentations which are the daily fare of the junior Bush. He could be a uniter…but he won’t. There are entirely too many fundamental issues upon which this nation is divided, issues which this unfortunate administration will not compromise. We, those people who did not support a second term for Bush, do not want more mercury in our water. We do not want more logging, or drilling in the ANWR. We want a rational approach, clearly defined for reducing the national deficit. We reject pre-emptive war as a strategy, and we want Osama Bin-Laden caught and brought to justice. We support our troops, and want them to have veteran’s benefits….something inconceivable in the Bush administration. We’re happy to declare war, but the government rejects the notion of caring for our soldiers? We want a FREE press. During Viet Nam there was no prohibition against displaying flag draped coffins. There was no effort to hide the number of maimed. The public was kept aware! We, the people, had a clue, we knew what we fought for, we knew the cost.
The Bush administration, and Bush in particular with his inarticulate grace, has nullified all of these concerns by claiming to fight a war on “terra,” which is exactly what they do. Bush continues to destabilize the environment, to destroy the US economy, to destroy the world by promoting terror, to inhibit research via fundamentalist ignorance, to block the Kyoto protocol, to stop buying Soviet plutonium through past treaties. Sweet Jesus, he puts more mercury in the water that your children, siblings, YOU enjoy. No, I will NOT unite with George W. Bush, or his policies. He is a failure by any measure, and I reject him.
