From Jeni Mitchell, Nov. 3, 2004:
===
After a year of campaigning that has riven America, with attacks both legitimate and scurrilous hurled back and forth across the country, we are now being asked by both President Bush and Senator Kerry to reunite as a nation in the spirit of reconciliation and healing.
Respectfully, sirs, I must refuse.
Respectfully, I refuse to reunite with those who value moral absolutism more than rational inquiry.
I refuse to reunite with those who believe America can and should act unilaterally in the world, and who fail to appreciate the complexity of the current global order.
I refuse to reunite with those who refuse to listen to, let alone evaluate, reasonable criticism and doubts.
I refuse to reunite with those who base policy upon an ideological vision of the world rather than the seasoned judgment of experts and practitioners.
I refuse to reunite with those who fail to understand that the resources of America belong to the American people, and are not the spoils of political warfare.
I refuse to reunite with those who believe "moral values" are more important than national security, a faltering economy, and our deadly and misguided adventure in Iraq.
I refuse to reunite with those who value conformity more than diversity, certainty more than curiosity, consistency more than fairness, and control more than freedom.
I refuse to reunite with those who sow fear where only caution is warranted, undermining the resiliency and courage of the American people.
I refuse to reunite with those who lack the empathy and common human decency that should compel us to care for those less fortunate than we – not simply through individual works of charity, but by building comprehensive social and economic networks for the underprivileged that do justice to our position as the world's richest nation.
I refuse to reunite with those who disparage intellectualism and a capacity for nuance as evidence of moral or personal weakness, and those whose lazy grasp of history leads them to support arrogant or foolish endeavors and opinions.
