Church, state boundaries fading away

DAYTONA BEACH -- Peggy Campbell sees a clear connection between the ballot box and the Bible.

"Our country was founded on Christian values . . . God anointed this country," attests the longtime secretary at First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach. And it's essential, she believes, to have a president whose positions reflect the Biblical teachings she holds dear.

Which is why Campbell, 61, couldn't be happier that she and millions of like-minded voters became a decisive force Tuesday in securing a second term for the man, she says, who mirrors her moral values.

According to exit polls and pundits, it wasn't the economy or terrorism or the war in Iraq that put President Bush over the top in the closely contested race. It was his position on such issues as same-sex marriage, abortion, stem cell research, and the state of Israel that spoke loudest to religiously oriented voters who rallied in numbers significant enough to make a difference.

1. How to defeat this crap
Education is key to counter religious conservatism. But wait the fundies are already pushing creationism in Wisconsin. Well, then the media offers a balanced picture. Nope, forgot, they have all the radio, TV, and most print now. Then, the courts will stand up for our rights. Damn, the chimp is in charge and will appoint right wing nut jobs to the bench. Does anyone else feel really threatened by this fundie moral power crap?

2. Let the holly wars continue! We can have our own holly war right
here on America soil. The 'christian radicals' will not win this one, they scare moderates and people in the repug party. This will backfire big time. People will die for three things:

Resources/Land
Women
Religion

5. no the country was not founded on Christian values
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 08:07 PM by Marianne
and why do ministers who are supposedly educated keep teaching this crap? And they will, most likely get tax payer money to keep up this farce?

They know that the country was not founded by the Puritans for crying out loud. Further the native Ameircans were here first and occupied this land, and they were not Christians

It was founded/established on the blood of the revolution when there were many others settled here from many other countries, who did not subscribe to Puritan beliefs, and the subsequent writing of the Constitution which established a separation of church and state.

6. 'God annointed this country' - Radicals also say, 'Separation of church
and state is not mentioned in the Constitution.' To which we, or you if you're in a conversation with a radical Christian, say, "Yes it is."

Radical Christians do not adhere to mainstream American values and beliefs. They intend and attempt to re-write our Constitution. These radicals rant and rave, stomp and puff, and get their way because mainstream people turn away from such inane talk and behavior.

Radicals need to have mainstream people like us say, "You're wrong," and "No" at every turn.

Radicals are bringing creationism to Wisconsin? I wonder if it's a test of the waters, to see how far (north!)they can take it.

How can we frame this issue of radicals forcing their radical religious beliefs on school children? How can we NOT let the radicals bully, bludgeon and smear to get their way with school children?

I've been trying to read everything George Lakoff and the Rockridge Institute has to offer online - especially regarding Framing. Framing the issues, framing the public debate - this is a great word! It reminds me of the Framers of our Constitution!

The Radical Right's Weakness

by The Rockridge Institute

The radical Right's messaging and framing infrastructure doesn't seem so fearsome if you know how to spot its weaknesses.

The radical Right is acutely aware of cases where the general public has progressive values and would ordinarily reject their agenda. The Right’s approach to such cases is deception, often through the use of Orwellian language — language that means the opposite of what it says.

For example, the term compassionate conservatism is used because leaders on the Right have traditionally been considered mean and lacking in empathy toward people who are needy, poor or oppressed. The term compassionate suggests that conservatives do care about such people, although their policies go in exactly the opposite direction.

This use of language is no accident.

By the way, this election has not yet been certified in most (or any?) states. Let's wait for all the chips to fall because chips probably failed and we have reason to believe electronic voting FRAUD influenced the election.

8. Not buying this moral values crap...
It troubles me that I don't recall the "moral values" option being one of the choices in any of the pre-election polls on "what's important to you."

My take: The repubs made sure it was in the exit poll question, so in case they won (or maybe they knew ahead of time they's win) they could twist ("frame") the outcome into an endorsemnet of the positions of the religious right.

Let's face it, the republic is on life support, and the plug's gonna get pulled after the midterm election of 2006 when the crusaders get their 60th senate seat.
