Reid Cuts a Deal with Bush
The Associated Press

Monday 23 November 2004

WASHINGTON - In a deal to let 175 of President Bush's nominees take office, an adviser to new Democratic leader Harry Reid, the Senate's staunchest opponent of a nuclear waste dump in Nevada, will be named to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

For months Senate Republicans had refused to take up, or even hold a hearing, on the nomination of Gregory Jaczko, Reid's adviser on nuclear issues.

In turn, Reid, who has pledged to try to kill the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, had blocked the Bush nominations.

In negotiations just before Congress recessed during the weekend, an agreement was worked out: the White House promised Jaczko would be appointed to a limited two-year term while Congress was in recess, and Reid lifted his hold on the package of Bush nominations, which zipped through the Senate.

Also, it was agreed that a Republican nominee to the NRC, retired Navy Vice Admiral Albert H. Konetzni, would be put on the commission and probably would become its chairman late next year.

1. Wow, that didn't take long
We might be wishing Daschle was still around *shudder* if Reid keeps this up.

2. I saw the Mayor of Las Vegas
This past year on one of the newsmagazines. He said the rail line to Yucca runs through his city, and that he would stop it and have the train crew arrested if they tried to go through. I can't find a link on it.

6. "Come to LV, gamble your money away, and watch the nuclear waste trains."
What a gripping PR campaign ...

3. Power is the only thing the Repugs respect.
The Republicans are not going to do anything because it is the "right thing" to do. They are only going to deal with the Democrats if we have power over something they want.

Reid was able to get his guy, Jackzo, on the commission, buy blocking Bush nominations until now.

Maybe Reid will be a good Minority leader for the Dems. At least he is willing to flex.

Blocking nominations is the only power play the Dems have right now. If the Senate Dems are afraid to use it we don't have a chance.

4. Remember this headline:
you will be seeing it a lot more in the future. And every time you read it, Reid will be selling us down the river.

My God, what a great deal: Bush gets lotsa fascists appointed everywhere, and Reid's pal gets on the NRC.

I guess Ole Harry wants us to be nostalgic for the good old days when Daschle was in his position.

The sole goal of Reid: get re-elected. And the Daschle approach worked so well for Tommy and the country.
