http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np=0&u_pg=1673&u_sid=1268862 DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver said he'll ask lawmakers next year to approve same-day voter registration and consider mail-in elections, both steps designed to drive up voter turnout.
In addition, Culver said he wants lawmakers to begin consolidating elections to cut down costs for local election officials. Meeting with reporters and editors of the Associated Press, Culver said Iowa has climbed to a sixth-place national ranking in voter turnout, but further gains can be made only by changing the law.
"We have absolutely, I believe . . . maxed out our civic engagement," Culver said. "I am all for trying to get more people out to vote."
Under current law, voter registration is cut off nearly two weeks before the election. Backers say that protection is designed to prevent voter fraud, an argument Culver rejected.
