'Dead' Livonia man allowed to vote
'Dead' Livonia man allowed to vote By Dan West Staff Writer
A Livonia man listed as dead in Michigan Secretary of State files was shocked that his name was not on the voter list when he reported to his precinct to cast his ballot on Election Day.
He was asked to cast a provisional ballot, which documented his votes pending the findings of research that would determine if he was an eligible voter. Provisional ballots are a federal creation in the wake of the controversial Florida recount during the 2000 president election. The new voter law is designed to prevent voter disenfranchisement, however, the legal standard for reviewing which ballots count has sparked some controversy.
City Clerk Val Vandersloot said 19 provisional ballots were cast on Election Day; 11 of them were certified as legitimate after three hours of post-election research.
