WE BROKE IT; WE PAY FOR IT - Altercation, Eric The Great
Good for France and Germany. If the Bush administration wants to be bailed out by the very nations upon which it heaped contempt and the institutions it sought to destroy, well then let it show it understands the magnitude of the catastrophe it has caused first. Why should the rest of the world pay for Bush’s folly when they did everything they could to prevent it and he did nothing but heap scorn on them for failing to follow his disastrous lead? Why, moreover, should they contribute to a policy that is clearly a failure and will clearly continue to fail when we are refusing to allow them to do what’s necessary to give it a reasonable chance for success?

It’s a sad day when the best we can hope for is the frustration of our own government’s aims by those of other powers, but had the French and Germans been successful in the first place, we would not be in the mess we’re in now. Meanwhile, remember this?

Oh yeah, they hate us even more. Was that even possible?

1. Good post, Darker.
I'm excited by the news this afternoon that the Germans & the French aren't falling for the bait. What they were saying, basically, is that there is absolutely nothing for them in the deal. It's pretty much, you contribute troops and $$$money, and we're still in full command.

The americans are just blowing smoke. My prediction: The US is holding out for the best deal, even though they know time is running out, big time. However, look closely and you can see the beads of sweat building on their upper lip.

The UN should stall, wait, hold out as long as they possibly can. The americans will come crawling back in a month or two, ready to forfeit their "prize".

Down the sink goes their dreams of controlling the earth. This was their first try, their #1 project right out of the starting gate, and it's shot to shit. Kinda makes you feel a little sad for them.

2. UN would change much...
As William Pfaff commented, why France and Germany (but also China and Russia), UN contributors should commit in reconstruction while they opposed to it for months and the UN presence wouldn't change anything (especially when resolutions are not respected) except for taxpayers.

If you are interested in european-us relations, I deeply suggest you to read its present and past columns. They are very clear, and often realize.
