Iraq 2004: What went wrong

By Paul Reynolds
World affairs correspondent, BBC News website

In 2004, Iraq went badly wrong - except for supporters of the insurgency, in which case it went grimly well.

2005 does not hold out much hope of an improvement, although there are still some optimists around who feel that the elections on 30 January will prove a milestone.

The problem in 2004 was that neither of the two main strands of American policy worked. Neither politics nor security took hold.

Power was formally handed over to an interim government at the end of June but this government failed to develop popular legitimacy, especially in the heartland of the insurgency, the Sunni areas of central Iraq.

1. Every war supporter has their "reason"
Sir Jeremy Greenstock: "allowing a security vacuum to develop"

Dear Sir Greenstock: insurgents = Iraq society = insurgents

Get a clue.

2. "Neither politics nor security took hold?" That's beside the point.
The point is that President Mightymouse was not ony told in no uncertain terms that the invasion WOULD go wrong, but HOW and WHY. What we're seeing now is the result of NO planning, not BAD planning!

3. What we're seeing is the result of an illegal and immoral invasion,
the reaction of people to the theft of their country, and the desire for revenge for the murder of their families and the total destruction of their homes and mosques.

Paybacks ARE a bitch.

7. Definately!
I mean really. What went wrong was we didn't allow the U.N. to finish it's job so that we could lift sanctions following no WMD's.
Yeah...like that would have ever happened!
