WP: Dull Paean – Showtime's 'DC 9/11' Is A Shameless Bush Booster
Edited on Sat Sep-06-03 12:24 AM by kskiska
By Tom Shales

Simultaneously dull and disgraceful, "DC 9/11: Time of Crisis," a new Showtime movie, uses the tragic attack on America in 2001 as the basis for a reelection campaign movie on behalf of George W. Bush.

The film is an insult to those who perished in the attacks and, really, an insult to America generally, but it's so insanely boring that people aren't likely to become very outraged over it. Written by conservative Republican Lionel Chetwynd, who admits to a bias in Bush's favor, the film -- premiering on Showtime tomorrow night at 8 -- is primitive propaganda that portrays Bush as the noblest hero since Mighty Mouse.

Nothing in historical record suggests Bush acted particularly heroically Sept. 11, 2001, but Chetwynd's script has him all but saddling up a horse and riding over to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban man-to-man. When Bush announces he will give a speech to the nation from the White House and aides try to talk him into seeking a safer location, Bush bellows, "If some tinhorn terrorist wants me, tell him to come on over and get me. I'll be home!"

(snip)

Bush repeatedly demands he be taken to the White House as Air Force One flies aimlessly about on that horrible September day: "I've got to get back to Washington because I'm not going to let those people keep me from getting home," he barks. And earlier: "Get me home! . . . The American people want to know where their damn president is." And still earlier: "People can't have an AWOL president!"

(snip)

Rove also gets to utter such glowing estimations of his boss as, "This is a man who feels very deeply." It's one more encomium in a movie already so slanted that it risks sliding right off the screen.

1. ROFLMAO - People can't have an AWOL president!
What an ironic choice of words. This AHole as been AWOL all his damn life.

TV Guide describes the writer of this crap Chimpy worship piece as "a self-described Bush 'acolyte and worshipper'".

2. Wonderful review!!!!
Talk about backfiring.
I really liked the
"Even sinister adviser Karl Rove, the Dr. Strangelove (Strangerove?) of the administration, is turned into a human platitude..."
statement.
So they know, they know, they know, the reality of this White House. How come they didn't say something like this before????

Did Rove approve the AWOL line? Knowing him, he probably wrote it. This film may replace 'Rocky Horror' for pure, delicious camp. I'm looking forward to it being shown at the neighborhood art house, where I can finally throw pretzels at the shrub without fear of being hauled off by SS.

On edit: for those of you who have Showtime, why don't you all get together via the internet or with your realtime buddies and do the Rocky Horror thing? Stock up on pretzels, whistles maybe a stuffed bunny (not real!), etc, etc, to toss at the tv everytime the character Bush feins courage. This could be a blast!

4. I do not agree
"Nothing in historical record suggests Bush acted particularly heroically Sept. 11, 2001,"

That is complete and utter nonesense.
I think he DID act the way any president should have acted and did a good job on that part which is WHY his popularity shot up acrosss the parties.

See, its crap like this that makes us look like shit. Look, why can't we stick to the valid and true arguments against the man? Why must we lie and exagerate and bend the truth all the time.

Not only do we have a bunch of morons for candidates (aside from Lieberman and Hillary) but we have a bunch of liars representing us in the media and across the political spectrum. Are you people so blind that you cannot see how bad we are hurting ourselves and how pathetic we have become?

Since when is it justified to be completely dishonest just to get our candidates to win?

6. Shales' point...
...is that there's no evidence that Bush was all kick-ass-and-take-names on that day, as he's portrayed in this hagiography....

I always figured that
Bush was more "Run and hide" and "As long as they don't kill me then I don't give a fuck" that day

7. ROFLMAOSMP!!!!!
You're joking, right? He was a deer in the headlights. I saw it. He was the WORST possible leader on that day. Where was he for several hours? All we got was some inadequate tape to hold us over while he scooted across the country, hiding out at military bases. Heroic? Oh...my...god! It is so sad and pathetic how some people will lie to themselves.

9. this is a valid criticism.
* has always been the last one off the mark and when he does finally move it is in a half-assed manner. It all started with the stem cell non-decision.
When he left those kids in Florida he said he was going directly back to Washington. Check the transcript at the WH website. He lied. He had no idea what to do because he is a clueless little mama's boy who has to be told everything he should think.

13. So you're saying
that a heroic leader SHOULD have sat and listened to a child read a story about a goat for twenty minutes, then hid in a hole in Nebraska for four hours?

15. Were you out of the country?
You think George behaved heroically? Honey, he didn't even behave NORMALLY.

You want a Republican hero? Rudy Giuliani, who had spent the previous years embarrassing New York with every other utterance, was a hero. He was in the midst of a divorce and fighting cancer. A building damn near fell on him. He ran for his life with the rest of lower Manhattan. And he was there for us every day, keeping us together.

Rudy behaved exactly as we needed him to behave. And we did need him badly. Because every word Bush ranted was the worst decision and the wrong path.

Bush showed no grief, no concern, not even a fleeting sense of responsibility. He kept on reading.

In his own words, he "hit the trifecta" with the murder of 3000 people on 9/11. He got his legislation, his budget, his war. Everything he wanted. And his points soared BECAUSE AMERICANS STAND TOGETHER IN A CRISIS AND BUSH REPRESENTED AMERICA.

He exploited our sorrow for gain. He's a monster, not a hero.

19. Gee, we are sooooo fooled by your claim to be one of "us"
Republicans are so amazingly stupid that they would probably buy something like that. But you are so obviously a freeper troll that it is laughable. Only freepers are that stupid.

If Bush were going to be heroic on 9/11 he would have got his ass to downtown Manhattan that day or the next. You know, like Bill Clinton did. And Clinton helped people when he got there. Bush was and is a coward. He admits his only motive was to "get out of harm's way". He is a chickenshit coward, like all freepers. Bush only made it to Manhattan when the coast was clear, and all he did then was grandstand and make promised of help that be broke.

21. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA
I'll say it again, so you can wrap your mind around it.

NOTHING IN THE HISTORICAL RECORD SUGGESTS BUSH ACTED PARTICULARLY HEROIC ON SEPT 11th 2001...

A ham sandwhich on rye would have had its popularity shoot up. Not only do we have a bunch of morons for candidates (aside from LIEBERMAN?!?! and Hillary? - hey, Hillary ain't a candidate)...

omg, go home...

23. Your hero BUsh
had Karen Hughes address the nation.......that was really presidential.

Your hero Bush didn't want an investigation into 9/11........neither did Cheney they both told Tom Daschle NOT to investigate and then lied about telling him.

Why no investigation? Could it be because they knew?
