GONZALES NOMINATION COULD ADVANCE AT JAN. 19 PANEL MEETING

The Senate Judiciary Committee today scheduled a markup session for Wed., Jan. 19, that is likely to include a vote on the nomination of White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales to be attorney general. However, Democrats on the panel could insist that the nomination be held over for one week. If they do not force the delay and the committee endorses the nominated as expected, the full Senate could vote to confirm Gonzales as early as the afternoon of Jan. 20, Inauguration Day. During a sometimes tense confirmation hearing before the committee on Jan. 6, Gonzales insisted he does not support torture of terrorism suspects, a response to criticism of memos he wrote as White House counsel that said al Qaeda terrorists were not guaranteed human rights protections normally afforded by the Geneva Conventions.

1. I never heard Gonzales

insist he does not support torture of terrorism suspects. When was this?

2. He claimed at his hearing last week

that the policy has been changed and the he agrees to abide with it. That's not exactly desclaiming the ideas in the memos he was involved in, but he also did say that the pictures sickened him. He was actually pretty elusive about the whole issue.

4. See, it's those little evasions that, especially for a lawyer, means that

"Gonzales insisted he does not support torture of terrorism suspects" is untrue. Congress was trying to get him to denounce it - the point was - he really wouldn't.
