Why sympathy for tsunami vics & none for Iraqi vics?

I've been pondering that question since the tsunami happened and this article

gives an explanation that resonates with me.

If the media were to show good pictures of Iraqi children suffering from the effects of the war, I wonder if that would change things. Fortuately for the Bushistas (and tragically for the rest of us), there seems little chance of that happening.

Because to admit that the Iraqi people were deserving of sympathy, would be to admit that we had done unspeakable things to them for no reason whatsoever...

2. Which victims? Bush's? Or Saddam's?

That's the fundamental question.

Everyone in this conflict claims to speak for the suffering Iraqis: Bush, the Islamisist fanatics, the Saddamites, etc., etc. Hell, half of them claim to speak for God!

But here's some wisdom: there's a difference between being clear eyed about the motivations of our own President and making up some romantic nonsense about how wonderful the Sunnis are (many of whom manned critical functions in the brutal Saddam dictatorship).

In your haste to condemn Bush, don't go apologizing for old Iraqi torturers.
