I think when he says he is friends, he's trying to indicate that he's a Washington insider and that he still can socialize with them without becoming one of them.

Won't comment further on Colmes and the DLC, but Daschle presided over the 2000 debacle, and is inside the Beltway so far you couldn't pry him out.
