13. I know.....the apologists have said that over and over......
in defense of the 180 degree change in foreign policy, even though that doesn't wash anyway.....just look at all the other crap they pulled: Kyoto, World Court, trade agreements, drug pricing.....EVERYthing they did, just about, was unilateral from the getgo

BUT, they use 911 to justify everything, don't they?

not resign.....CSPAN quoted the Time article (my guess) this morning.

I saw/heard it.

Cheney called him.......fired him in a most coldblooded fashion.

THEN, had the effrontery to try to get him to say he was resigning of his own volition.

ONeill says he told Cheney he was "too old to start lying now"

He's a damn good actor. if you think carefully about what he said, he's asking Lesley whether she as a journalist sees that there is a story there about why an administration would attack a truth-teller. He is framing things so that once the attacks start coming some people will see them as unfair retaliation a la Joe Wilson.

27. My overall response
That stuff at the end about O'Neil not having a clue that he's painting an unflattering protrait of the *administration was carefully sequenced to help put things back in the box, as was the final comment from McCellan.

There are two narrative arcs for this kind of story. One starts with a defense of the target and ends with the big torpedoing statements; the other leads with the torpedos and ends with the defense of the target. The editorial decision as to which one to go with is complex, but it is essentially the calculus by which the editor convinces him or herself that the story is "balanced." We got "both sides" of the story, here, but they selected the clips and arranged them in such a way as to leave O'Neil's credibility, rather than Bush's, as the final question in the viewer's mind.

this piece was dominated by editing. O'Neill was hardly even on.

In reality, O'Neill's book is the story, along with Susskind's documents. This piece may be 60 Minutes's' bid to be the definitive O'Neill story, but it's not.

59. Nothing like the empirical check
... to rein in High Theory. I know something about editing, though, and I know they could have pushed this for WAY more impact than they did. But it's obvious that they chose to edit it "down" rather than "up." Doesn't mean they quashed the story, obviously--not my point at all. Just that when you look at what they did do, you see them using various techniques to cushion the impact.

I too am curious about what your b-in-law said when he got his breath back.

35. Bad night for ChimpyCo
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 07:30 PM by BeyondGeography
Treasury Secretary was part of the National Security Council. Two key documents provided to author Susskind:

•Economic plan for post-Sadaam Iraq

•Map of oil fields and accompanying list of contracts

Both dated March 2001.

The story of this bogus war is even worse than thought. Who knew?

And I was amazed by the part about Bush gently questioning the second tax giveaway to the wealthy ("Didn't they already get something? Shouldn't we do more for the middle?") and being talked into it by his POLITICAL advisor Rove ("stick with principle, stick with principle...).

All in all, nauseating stuff.

51. can you imagine the explosion there'd have been.......
if Robert Rubin had been fired, or some other high level Clinton cabinet member, and they'd written a similar bombshell?

think back at all the LIEfests that were published, from the screeds by the bimbettes (Olson, Coulter, Graham) to Aldrich, to the late, VERY unlamented Bob Bartley.

think of the CONSTANT publicity such trash engendered.

THAT crap is the REAL reason Bush got selected in the first place.

they sowed the electoral soil with the salt of mendacity, poisoning the public consciousness against ANY candidate the dems would have nominated.

the fact that it was Gore just made it that much easier for them

look what they're doing to the dem candidates now, for christ's sake

46. A sure-fire indicator to watch for tomorrow...
...watch "Hannity & Colmes." If Hannity jumps on this with his standard "I cannot believe...at a time when our country is at war...our President could be accused of (fill in atrocity here)" rhetoric, that's a pretty good sign that it's business as usual at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

If he doesn't mention it at all, somebody's running scared.

That's Fox's pattern with "accurate data." Last week, when the "1000 jobs" report was released and it was the #1 subject on everybody's lips, Bill O'Reilly's main topics on "The O'Reilly Factor" were:

1) Gay Boy Scouts in San Diego
2). Laura Bush, and how she brings a much-needed touch of class to the White House
3). Pete Rose
4). Naomi Judd
...and the results of his latest poll, "should your humble correspondent respond when he is personally attacked?"

Trust me. Watch Hannity tomorrow and use him as a "temperature check."

He does not look 2 B a healthy man 2 me. So squatter nicknamed him 'big O' huh and O'Neill thinks this little endearment is meant 2 B degrading? Ya think? I cannot Blieve he thinks he will not B attacked 4 telling the truth or that his portrait of squatter is unflattering. This guy was a CEO? Nobody achieves that level of power w/ their naivete intact.

telling the truth, he won't B attacked - this is really bizarre considering this administration wouldn't know the truth if it screamed @ them. There have been so many lies told they don't even pretend 2 keep track of them anymore.

49. Amazing
I haven't had a TV for 8 years, there didn't ever seem to be anything to watch. I recently got one because I wanted to follow the campaign coverage. I only get NBC and CBS and was thrilled to see 60 minutes tonight. I'd read most of what was said but it is more powerful to see it being said. The part about Rove repeating a mantra over and over to get Bush back in line was downright creepy but what I've suspected. The portrayal of Cheney really did seem to be that of someone without a soul. O'Neill did seem naive about the reaction he'll get, not sure what to think about that.

I was also impressed with the hundreds of interviews and documents the author used, this is much more than about O'Neill.

54. Boy, if Americans don't know that they have been had by our
WMD, 2 tax cuts for the rich lying son-of-a-bitch(literally) Resident after this, then they really don't care.

Bush our 2 tax cuts for the rich President..another bumper sticker.

OIL,WAR, and MORE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH and who cares about the dead?

Rove, Bush and Cheney lied and many died.

Actual transcripts from meetings that have Bush on record as saying do we need more tax cuts for the rich, we just did that and then going along with it.

Maps and meetings in January 01, about war in Iraq, nation building and oil production. What about the mushroom clouds and the imperativeness of going to war despite the UN asking for a little more time when they were planning this now documented from January 10,2001. The lies are coming home to roost.

Liars, thieves, murderers..I keep seeing the picture of the little Iraqi girl lying dead in the arms of her father wrapped in a purple shawl..the father crying to the heavens..YOU BASTARDS DID THIS IN OUR NAME..
