What were the reasons for UN sanctions against Iraq
I was under the impressions that the sanctions were imposed because Saddam gassed the Kurds in 1988, right or wrong?

1. Basically for invading/occupying Kuwait
US/UK continued to support Saddam after he gassed the Kurds.

5. I think you mean this:

If you want a real mindfuck -- per an ex arms dealer that Alan Friedman spoke too (FT journalist who wrote "Spiders Web"), the CIA were trying to channel RPG's to Iraq during Operation Desert Shield. There's a deep, dark, murky history to be told about Bush Sr's presidency (specifically BCCI & BNL/Iraqgate) but we'll probably have to wait another 50 years to start getting close.

2. wrong..retyred
sanctions were never placed on Iraq as a consequence of the gassing of Halabja..four days after the iraq invasion of kuwait the UN instituted a trade embargo against iraq..the purpose to compel iraq to withdraw..you know the rest....the continued use of sanctions was then used as leverage to force iraq to comply with resolution 687..WMD's...you know the rest..a war fought on the basis of the resolution..500,000 iraqi men women and children died as a result of sanctions (unicef figures not mine) and more during a illegal war..war crimes have been committed..will justice be fulfilled..i doubt it..

hope this helped..
