I have never been so mad at DU
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:08 AM by AlecBGreen
In case you missed the Top 10 Idiots, heres an excerpt from #10:

Still, since the Club for Growth has seen fit to run this ad, we now feel much more comfortable about telling them to keep their pitchfork-hoisting, hoedown-attending, moonshine-drinking, tractor-driving, dungaree-wearing, banjo-playing, pig-fucking, Clinton-penis-obsessing, right-wing freak show out of our primary process. See you next week!

FU DU. I am a southern Democrat and damn proud of it. For the record pig-fucking IS disgusting, the GOP does obsess about Big Dogs penis and this country is a right-wing freak show. However, you should know that I farm for a living by hoisting a pitchfork, I love hoedowns, moonshine is great, we own a tractor, my mom bought me dungarees for Christmas, and bluegrass music is divine. Fuck you for labelling me with your stereotypes. THIS IS WHY WE LOST THE SOUTHERN VOTE. Sorry if this is a rant and sorry I dont have anything substanial to write about, but this is seriously the angriest I have ever been in a long time.

edit: I also believe in God and read my Bible. Do you want to attack me on that one too?

53. They did it in humor. Plus it's a guest writer.

It's hard for urban northerners to relate to the rest of the country sometimes. As a relatively rural northerner I agree, they're way out of line.

Very soon in the primaries, they will begin to see the light. I'd bet dollars to donuts that he bolts and goes third party the little snot nose.

Gephardt? Nope, he's going down in Iowa. Kerry? Nope, he'll be finished in New Hampshire. Ditto Lieberman. Clark and Edwards will withdraw after their stinging defeats in South Carolina. So who's going to stop Dean? Kucinich? Sharpton? Frankly, I like my guy's odds.

BTW-
Al Gore could have won WITHOUT the South(New Mexico is not really "the south") had Nevada not fallen for the Lil'Dictators Yucca Mt. lies, Gore wouldn't have even needed Florida.

The census has changed the math a little bit, but it's still very possible to win the Presidency without "the South".

17. Indeed
Dean can win the election even if he loses every single southern state. All he needs are the Gore states plus NH and AZ (or NV). All this stuff about the south being "crucial" for Democrats is a bunch of hogwash. We beat George Bush without the south in 2000, and I'm sure we can do it again in 2004.

20. But why would you want to win WITHOUT the South?
If the Dems are ever going to get back into power, they have to compete all over the country; it's silly to write off an entire region.

Just like it's silly to write off entire groups of people...keep doing that & no one is left.

50. Not to mention New England
New England is filled with progressive, tolerant people, it's home to some of our finest universities (Harvard, Yale, MIT, Brown etc.), several wonderful, thriving, historic cities, and has magnificent scenery. Yet when it comes to presidential politics New England is considered taboo and we're all supposed to be ashamed of how liberal it is. Well screw that! New England rocks!

Dont label me just cause your pissed at the South. And in regards to the post that says we dont need the southern vote to win the WH, your right, electorally speaking. But if you ignore a third of our country just because you can then I say you are no better than Bush. Thats right, you heard me...

The democratic primary process has devolved into "my lifestyle is better than your lifestyle" and "you're picking on me because I'm southern/northern/eastern/western/midwestern/southwestern." Get a grip. As a native rural southerner who's lived in the northeast and the far fringes of the left coast, I think there are more important fish to fry than whose regional sensibilities are the most tender. This is becoming very disgusting. If ya'll want to take your toys home and play alone, be my guest. As my grandma used to say, "don't let the door smack your butt on the way out."

im tired of seeing hard working neighbors being bashed just because they vote Repug. I hate the GOP. I dont hate everyone who votes for them. I merely raised this issue because it angered me and I have a right to voice my opinion. The south went GOP b/c of segregation. Will we get it back by labelling them ignorant slobs who cant get a decent job or make a "correct" vote?

47. here's a true story....
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:53 AM by mike_c
I did my doctoral research at the University of Georgia studying the ecology of the southern pine beetle. For several years I gave a seminar about that research that started with a wonderful cartoon of a beetle wearing coveralls, with a decidedly red neck, an MF baseball cap, and a wad of tobacco in his cheek, spitting into a dixie cup. I gave that seminar at southern universities, northeastern universities, northwestern universities, and at national meetings, and the "southern" pine beetle slide always got a good laugh, lightened the mood, etc. Bear in mind that I'm a Georgian so I've got some street cred concerning southern sterotypes.

Then one day I gave the talk at Auburn. The lights were dim so I couldn't see the audience very well, but I noticed right away that NO ONE laughed at that slide. When the lights came up there were in fact numerous people sitting in the room wearing denim coveralls and ballcaps with tractor logos, spitting into cups. I don't think they were offended particularly, it's just that nobody got the joke. I certainly wasn't trying to offend anyone, and after all it was my own heritage and my own work that I was lampooning too.

It, like the top 10 article you found so offensive, was humor. We laugh the best when we can laugh at ourselves, and we're taking ourselves way too seriously when we can't be humorous about our foibles, even when they involve pig-fucking (--for the record, I've always been true to my cousin...).

What do you do in Cali? Ill be driving through Humboldt in May/June this year...maybe we can get together and sample some local "produce" and laugh at ourselves. Whaddya think?
