I think we should have a national Winter Holidays week |
(the other thread is too long for me to load on my rickety old dialup, so I thought I'd say this here.)
I think we should have the government declare a National Winter Holidays week to replace Christmas, Hannukah, etc. Not replace them in terms of religion, obviously, but replace them in terms of public holidays with days off, etc. Thus, we could have a generic holiday while at the same time people of different faiths could celebrate their specific holidays. Most religions have a holiday around the Solstice anyway. The only exception is Islam, since it runs on a lunar calendar. But maybe there's some way they could take part as well, since it's a secular holiday celebrating general human values.

1. You have raised a good question. |
Why has the Government given Christmas as a federal holiday but not Hannakah or Kawanza or for that matter any other religious holiday. If the Government were truly secular they would do exactly what you suggest. Easter is another holiday that is totally religious in nature.

2. I think it would be amazing if we could just get labor day off |
I could not agree with you more! But considering the fact that many "working" people work on holidays, I do not really see the point. I think we should start by reclaiming labor day, (yes, that means no Labor day sale at the mall and you should fill your car with gas and your fridge the day before because everything would be closed).
