We didn't know it, but that's about when America reached it's Peak.
Peak Oil, that is.
America had just reached the half-way point of her proven oil reserves.
OPEC had just been formed, and when they saw Peak Oil in the U.S., they knew they had us over a barrel.
The resulting gas lines were a shock to the American psyche. Lord knows, I was shocked.

Then you would wait on line for more than a block. Sometimes the station ran out of supply just before your turn. I remember the price being something like 69 cents a gallon.

But my friend and I would get to the station in my mom's car @ 4AM and wait until it opened, then go back home and catch the bus to school.
