Grocery chain Dominicks closes 12 stores drops 800 employees; Fannie May
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 11:50 PM by ariellyn
candies goes out of business leaving lifetime employees without pensions as it moves overseas; and landmark Drury Lane dinner theatre to be bulldozed for a brand new Walmart.

More than 600 Fannie May workers will lose jobs. First came the announcement in Chicago last week that the manufacturing portion of the business would move overseas. Now, we hear the whole chain is shutting down (no doubt to be reopened under another name by acquisition specialists who will wash their hands of "costly" retirees and tenured wage earners.)

And the lead story is Michael Jackson on tonight's local news. And oh yeah, the economy is improving! :eyes:

1. Oh, No!!
I love Fannie Mae. I grew up eating their chocolate!! This really sucks! Every Easter and Christmas I had Fannie Mae Candies. I still order it online, I guess not anymore. That really sucks, specially for all those people who lost their jobs. :-(

Which dinner theatre is being bulldozed? And for Walmart -- YUCK!

2. what about See's?

If See's is bailing out Fannie Mae, that's not a bad thing. See's is an outstanding company, longtime supporter of the arts in San Francisco. (Unless they've been bought out by some mega-horror too.)

And See's is really good candy.

3. this needs to be a political issue in the front and center....
Edited on Tue Jan-13-04 12:30 AM by mike_c
Not just an economic issue, but a matter of patriotism (or the marked lack thereof). The ONLY thing that most corporations respect is their bottom line. They will happily screw their long-time employees, rewarding their loyalty and productive work with poverty and distain at the drop of a hat. It's ironic that so many "captains of industry" are staunch patriotic conservatives when it comes to ra-ra jingoism and flag-waving, but their real loyalty is ultimately to greed and exploitation. Every U.S. corporation that moves its operation overseas and leaves its workforce stranded hurts the entire nation for its own narrow benefit. This should be stopped.
