Is Paul O'Neil like the "typical" Republican ?
On NBC this morning with Katie Couric, he said he would "probably" vote for Bush. How could anyone be so loyal to their Party that they would vote for a person that they thought was like a "blind man in a room full of deaf people"? How could could anyone vote for someone who he believes is so "disengaged"? How could he vote for someone who he thinks is not calling the shots? How could he vote sor someone who he thought was a "bully" to him and others...and who lied to get us into a war in Iraq? What is in the Republican blood to explain such loyalty? 'The Price of Loyalty' indeed.

1. He sounds fairly far right, but not a neo-con.
He's old, and he cares about social security.

6. Actually, He Doesn't Care About Social Security
One of the most jaw-dropping things he said while he was Treasury Secretary was that he never really believed in Social Security -- that people should be able to save up enough during their working lives for retirement.

At the time, I thought it was a callous, not to mention a dangerous attitude coming from the Treasury Secretary. Now I'm inclined to put it down to cluelessness about the working class and about the effects of comments like this.

8. getting close
A study in frustrating contradictions. Such is an irrational ideology when all the good in you is invested in it. He would support the destruction of Social Security unintentionally then, if his compatriots structured policy that way. Indirectly, and then blame someone else.

This is too much change for him. His main problem is that habit of speaking his mind too openly and innocently. Snow is not exactly a model of rational acumen either, but he is a more precipitable and bought game player.

A proof of WH stupidity was ever letting O'Neill sit in on those meetings. Too bad he didn't get invited into Cheney's private circle meetings. That would be hilarious.

And extremely unlikely.

11. What he said this morning was that he opposed the 3rd tax cut
in part because the money could have shored up SS. That was the only reason I said that.

Of course that could have been a lie, because Suskind said yesterday morning that O'Neill opposed the SECOND tax cut. It's hard to tell what to believe here. There's a lot of pussy-footing going on.

2. I believe what he says about Bush...
But I also believe that part of this was payback.

Have any of you seen the video where Bush is openly mocking him at a business gathering? I mean, I would be pissed.

It's not like he is going to stop being a repuke, he just wanted to stick it to Bush which I think is a great thing but don't fool yourself into believing that he's had some sort of change of heart.

3. He said he got all the information on CD and never looked at it...
He gave it all to Suskind. He doesn't know what was on the CD. Mr Suskind, please make a copy and give it to someone not in the Bush Administration.

7. Who know? It doesn't really matter anyway.
The 19,000 documents are all that matters. As long as they're genuine, O'Neil could be Satan himself and it wouldn't change the message one iota.

12. he`s an old line republican
who thought he could fit in with the neocons that have taken over the party. he found out that he couldn`t. as for the ss statements, there are alot of people who think that way but that`s their opinion, they don`t hide behind lies like bush and his klan do. that`s the difference between the old and new republicans , the old party told the truth to your face the new group doesn`t.
