I shivered, a little, as I watched Lisa Meyers' report on NBC the other night:

"New and threatening messages have been received from Al Qaeda. There's a videotape aimed at American and Saudi Arabian rulers and another that includes what appears to be well-produced footage of the 9/11 attacks – raising still other questions."

This new 9/11 footage sure does raise a lot of other questions, first and foremost: who shot the video? It was posted on what is described as "a known Al-Qaeda website" last Wednesday, although it was taken down after a few days. Aside from the usual militaristic gymnastics by jihadi commandos, Meyers reports:

4. ABC News: "The White Van: Were Israelis Detained on Sept. 11 Spies?"

"Maria says she saw three young men kneeling on the roof of a white van in the parking lot of her apartment building. 'They seemed to be taking a movie,' Maria said.

"The men were taking video or photos of themselves with the World Trade Center burning in the background, she said. What struck Maria were the expressions on the men's faces. 'They were like happy, you know … They didn't look shocked to me. I thought it was very strange,' she said.

"The arresting officers said they saw a lot that aroused their suspicion about the men. One of the passengers had $4,700 in cash hidden in his sock. Another was carrying two foreign passports. A box cutter was found in the van. But perhaps the biggest surprise for the officers came when the five men identified themselves as Israeli citizens.

Update: Two readers have written to say that this video is actually not new. It appears in the Nova documentary Why the Towers Fell, which is available on DVD. I've never seen this documentary, so I apologize for not realizing that the footage has been released. I should've known better than to take the word of NBC News and the FBI.

As reader NT pointed out, this leads to a very different disturbing question: How could the FBI and NBC News not have known that this footage already appeared in a documentary from PBS? Considering that they have virtually unlimited resources and that it's their job to know these things, how did both of them come to the conclusion that this is previously unseen footage? <15 Dec 2003>

Note that the MSNBC piece cites Steve Emerson as a counterterrorism consultant. Just about he only time this guy didn't blame arabs during the "early speculation" phase for a terrorist act or potential terrorist act (such as OKCity, or TWA800) was (ironically) the 1993 WTC bombing, which (early on)he speculated was the work of some faction of the former Yugoslavia.

Being a TV Talking Head means never having to actually be right, as long as you can blather.

Think back, in '93 the Military Industrialists were looking at the Balkans as a great place to test their new eeaponry. If the '93 bombing hadn't been screwed up - you can bet they would have made a case for invading the Balkans.

Emerson is a Black Ops assett all the way.

8. And in 1993, the FBI had an informant

who offerend to secretly substitute a harmless powder for the bomb detonated beneath the World Trade Center. The Agency called off the plan.

New York Times story, Thursday October 28, 1993 by Ralph Blumenthal:

Law-enforcement officials were told that terrorists were building
a bomb that was eventually used to blow up the World Trade Center,
and they planned to thwart the plotters by secretly substituting
harmless powder for the explosives, an informer said after
the blast.

The informer was to have helped the plotters build the bomb
and supply the fake powder, but the plan was called off by
an F.B.I. supervisor who had other ideas about how the informer,
Emad Salem, should be used, the informer said.
