Get ready to puke: "Space Cowboy"
Ugghhhh. I just saw a nauseating fax. I can't post it word for word, but this is almost exactly as it read:

"Your spokesmen should be excited about the President's bold, new vision for America's space program. Be sure to reference President Kennedy's landmark decision and our President's attempt to follow up on this vision. This is the 21st century, and it is one of hope. If you find the opportunity, and it's in the right forum, perhaps even refer to the President as the "Space Cowboy."

Geee, I wonder what the "right forum" is ("right forum" is a direct quote)? Get ready to see that title across your t.v. screen. I can't take this shit any more.

My friend who sent me the fax (and who gave me permission to post its gist here) thought it was the funniest thing he'd seen in awhile. He said it was payback for his hangover from last month.

God, I hope nobody attempts the cornball "space cowboy" line.

I started using that as a joke when I first heard about this.

How about "Moon-unit"

12. I don't think they see it as an insult.
Look at that piece of crap James Garner, Clint Eastwood film of the same title. The old white dudes watching Faux will eat it up. I don't watch much t.v., so I really want to hear if anyone does it.

If Bush is the "Space Cowboy," then who's the "Gangster of Love"? Maybe Neil Bush? Ouch. That would me Jeb is "Maurice."

In a time when our soldiers are being killed every day, the deficits are out of control, and the job market sucks, I really don't think people will embrace a loony "space cowboy".

8. Gee, I hope they do!
I think you've been had. That reads like satire to me. "Be sure to reference President Kennedy's landmark decision and our President's attempt to follow up on this vision. "

"perhaps even refer to the President as the "Space Cowboy."

One can only hope that some wingnuts also bite and "Space Cowboy" rolls across the Faux ticker all evening.

17. It's not satire. It's serious.
And, frighteningly enough, it's not half as bad as some of the other crap that gets sent to me. 90% of the garbage doesn't make it on air. Why do I have a feeling this one may get on air?

Because it's so stupid, so satirical, that the monkeys will love it. Exhibit A: monkeyboy in his flight suit doll--not satire. Exhibit B: a paperdoll book of monkeyboy and his family. Exhibit C: a dollar bill that says "There's a new sheriff in town."

This is all crap DU would make to mock the monkey (ah, yes, echoes of Peter Gabriel) but that the monkeys take seriously.

They're tryng to look like democrats. Bush wants his name to conjure JFK. This is absolutely unacceptable bullshit. The fact that Bush occupies (has stolen) the seat Kennedey sat in is a fucking crime against humanity. They shouldn't even be listed on the same list of presidents. ARGH!!!!

23. oh great...
so now we're supposed to decry and protest an expanded space program?! I am enthralled by the potential exploration of space, Bush or no Bush. I just wish one of our nine candidates had spoke-up about it first. Now I'll get flamed everytime I endorse space exploration because (from the signs here at DU) it's about to become politically incorrect to drea mabout exploring our solar system.

Our anger should NOT be the idea of exploring space, but rather that our political opponents are trying to seize the concept for themselves. The NEGATIVE reaction hee at DU is exactly what Karl Rove wants to see.

39. I should have clarified my reaction: Bush does not have a
vision- everything is planned for him by Rove and other PR people. So for the airhead and other headlines to say "Bush's vision" p--s me off. Space exploration is fine with me. I just hate the politicizing, especially when they make it out like that moron has a vision.

44. It's Not Going To Happen
Just like it didn't happen when Poppy said the SAME EXACT GODDAMN THING in July of 1989 (a base on the moon, manned mission to Mars). It's one of those things that Dubya can pretend will happen, set the timeline for WAY past when he'll be out of office (2015 for the moon base, 2030 for manned missions to Mars, I believe). Those are the best kind of political promises...

"As President, I plan to fund scientific research to give every man, woman, and child a unicorn by the year 2027!"

26. WHAT IT"S REALLY ABOUT
It's about killing the Space program as we know it and moving towards "Star Wars" type programs, if any. Mostly it's about election year politics. From AOL:

Part of the moon-Mars initiative would be funded by shifting money already in NASA's budget, officials said. The plan calls for retiring the space shuttle by the end of this decade and quickly concluding the U.S. obligations to the International Space Station. The shuttle now costs NASA about $4 billion a year and the station about $1 billion.

And from Mark Morford, who pretty much sums it all up:
This is what it boils down to, really: a big joke. There will be no men on Mars in 2020. There will be no massive, super-keen space station on the moon anytime soon. Even BushCo's own financial advisers openly cringe when the Mumbly One tosses up such an obvious and impossibly costly PR stunt, one so clearly designed to instill a false sense of hope and "America rules!" faux patriotism in a country heavily drugged on fear and false righteousness.
