Another interesting relationship...
http://tikkun.org/index.cfm/action/current/article/209.html

An overwhelming majority of Americans consider themselves to be religious. Yet according to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, people who attend church more than once a week vote Republican by 63 percent to 37 percent; people who seldom or never attend vote Democratic by 62 percent to 38 percent.

This disparity should concern Democrats if not as a matter of faith then as a matter of politics. More important, it should concern anyone who cares about the role of religion in public life. By failing to engage Republicans in this debate, the Democrats impoverish us all. ......

For too many Democrats, faith is private and has no implications for political life. But what kind of faith is that? Where would America be if the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had kept his faith to himself? ......

How a candidate deals with poverty is a religious issue, and the Bush administration's failure to support poor working families should be named as a religious failure. Neglect of the environment is a religious issue. Fighting pre-emptive and unilateral wars based on false claims is a religious issue (a fact not changed by the capture of Saddam Hussein).

More in the article, but... comments?

1.  I don't entirely disagree with you, BUT...
I think this line from your post goes a long way to explain things, at least for me: "For too many Democrats, faith is private and has no implications for political life. But what kind of faith is that? Where would America be if the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had kept his faith to himself? ......"
Dr. King tried to practice what he preached. That is the difference between him and most of those who claim to have religion. Religion and its doctrines becomes completely meaningless when it is prostituted in the name of maintaining the status quo.
I would rather spend the rest of my life in a dungeon, eating rats and bugs then join the hypocrisy that is (for the most part) American religion. I consider myself to be spiritual and that is an entirely different matter from being religious.

2. I think the Dems need to show
just how "un-Christian" most Republicans really are, especially those who claim to be such moralistic Christians.

Christ was a liberal and he'd royally kick the ass of these fundie repuke hateful, hurtful, bigoted, judgmental, moralistic, self-righteous, hypocritical, so-called "Christians" who wouldn't know Jesus and what he would do if they were standing right in front of him. He'd be the one helping a homeless guy and they'd be yapping about how he was just another bleeding heart "librul" who, instead of helping that bum, should have let him fend for himself and not become a drain on tax resources. So what if he freezes to death, that's not their problem.

We need to show just how unchristian they really are.

3. People who are religious
are more willing to do as they are told rather than think for themselves. Seems to me as though that better describes Republicans these days.

Doesn't anyone else consider it creepy how many people have an invisible friend?
