Breaking: O'Reilly in a Wheel Chair!
Edited on Wed Jan-14-04 05:51 PM by crissy71
DU spies who work in the "Dark Star" buidling on Sixth Ave (News Corp) spotted O'Lielly at the lobby newstand, consigned to a wheelchair, pathetically having his assistant get magazines for him.

Maybe he kicked the TV too hard last night after watching Franken on Charlie Rose!

UPDATE - MORE DETAILS: Mr Bill was speaking spanish to the news clerk (who looked but wasn't Spanish - probably Pakistani) saying una mas gum por favor

Sorry, but permanently disabling illness or injury is not something we should wish on anyone. I wouldn't even wish the constant worry of getting to that point (which is what i experience) on anyone.

Sorry, don't me to preach. Just struck a raw nerve when i read your post.

61. Perhaps a Karmic lesson? While it is wrong to wish him ill,
I think we can hope he learns valuable lessons that will guide him along his path to enlightenment, as the Buddhists would say?

I can say personally, that I learned more about the plight of the disabled after 8 weeks on crutches than I could ever have by observing. At the end, not only had I built incredible upper body strength for a woman of my age, but I now will avoid stores and businesses that make no accomodations for handicapped. And, nothing enrages me more than to see young, athletic able-bodied folks park in handicapped spaces (probably in a car belonging to their elderly handicapped parents).

We can only hope that the experience benefits O'Reilly in his long term understanding. And, yes, like everyone else here, I am human enough to think he really NEEDS the experience. But, I'll be gracious enough to hope it is short-term and not due to any horrendous disease process.

33. It's a painful disease where uric acid crystals
collect in your extremities, usually feet. Henry VIII had it and it made him unable to walk without support. It can be caused by a number of things, but is commonly associated with eating too much rich food, and (of course), consuming too much alcohol.

51. From my anatomy & physiology textbook:
Uric acid, a normal waste product of nucleic acid metabolism, is ordinarly excreted in urine without any problems. However, when blood levels of uric acid rise excessively (due to excessive production or slow excretion), it may be deposited as needle-shaped urate crystals in the soft tissues of joints. An inflammatory response follows, leading into an antagonizingly painful attack of gouty arthritis, or gout. The initial attack typically affects one joint, often at the base of the great toe.

Gout is far more common in males than females because males naturally have higher blood levels of uric acid. Because gout seems to run in families, genetic factors are definitley implicated.

Untreated gout can be very destructive; the articulating bone ends fuse and immobilize the joint. Fortunately, several drugs that terminate or prevent gout attacks are available. Patients are advised to avoid alcohol excess (which promotes uric acid overproduction), and foods high in purine-containing nucleic acids, such as liver, kidneys, and sardines

---

From my Medical Terminology Book:

Gouty Arthritis: Inflammation of joints caused by excessive uric acid in the body:

A defect in the metabolism of uric acid causes too much of it to accumulate in blood (hyperuricemia), joints and soft tissues near joints. The uric acid crystals (salts) destroy the articular cartillage and damage the synovial membrane. A joint cheifly affected is the big toe; hence, the condition is often called podagra (pod/o means foot, -agra means excessive pain). Treatment consists of drugs to lower uric acid production and to prevent inflammation and a special diet that avoids foods that are rich in uric acid, such as red meats, red wines, and fermented cheeses.

:)

Gotta love us nursing students, eh?

47. Interesting, especially in light of this little bit of
O'Reilly insensitivity I came across on the web:

http://www.ljworld.com/section/kusexclass/storypr/131228

The O'Reilly Factor"

Dailey told Nicole Denney, a Leavenworth freshman who uses a wheelchair, he regretted she was exposed to Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly referring to one of the class sessions as "Wheelchair Sex Day," even though the day's discussion focused on society's tendency to view some people as sexually irrelevant.

"Every time I heard that phrase -- Wheelchair Sex Day -- my heart bled," said Dailey, who appeared close to tears.

Turning to Denney, he added, "Young lady, I don't know how on Earth you managed that kind of assault on your reality, on what is your life."
